I've created an EvC Forum Facebook page: Update Your Browser | Facebook. The goal is to channel Facebook users interested in the creation/evolution debate to the EvC Forum website.
I don't know Facebook and need help.
First, I need to add our logo to the top page in the same way as the large image at the top of this IBM page: Update Your Browser | Facebook. How do I do that?
Second, why is the link to IBM's page simple (just .../IBM) while EvC Forum's is complex (.../pages/EvC-Forum/696785293741157).
Third, I can't seem to go through the Facebook promotion process (where I can list interest areas) without selecting a payment method. EvC Forum of course accepts no payments.
Fourth, constructive advice about what to do next would be greatly appreciated.

Mine has a camera logo in the upper left corner that I can click on to change the pic.
That just changes the little square pic. Visit Update Your Browser | Facebook and you'll see what I mean. They have the little square pic that just says IBM, but behind it they also have an image that spans the entire width of the page.
Another question for people: Under Settings->Topics, it won't let me "Choose three words to describe your Page". The "Save Changes" button is there but not active.

Hmmm, I had tried that before but it didn't seem to do anything. Worked this time. Gotta be user error, but I don't know what I did. Thanks!
I'll have to work on the image. They require it to be 150 pixels high minimum, but then they magnify it to fit the height of the space instead of changing the height of the space. They're forcing me to an aspect ratio for which I have no suitable image at this time. Maybe I'll just throw up my hands in frustration and grab some generic image of a bunch of happy young people enjoying themselves like everyone else does.
I wonder if there's a way to automatically update the Facebook page with things like most recent post or member.

It's the aspect ratio that's the problem. Facebook scales the image so that it is exactly as high as the space available in that box at the top of the page. If you have an image that is many times wider than it is high then very little of it will fit. Their box is 2.75 times as wide as it is high, while the EvC Forum image is 6.9 times as wide as high, so only about 40% of the width of the image will fit in that box.

Another great idea.
I know you were tongue-in-cheek, but this won't remove anonymity from members. People coming from Facebook will (soon) be able to log in here automatically through their Facebook account, but they'll still have the option to register an EvC Forum account and remain anonymous.

Getting The "evcforum" Username at Facebook
When I try to set our "username" at Facebook to "evcforum", which would allow people to reach the our Facebook page with the link Update Your Browser | Facebook, I'm told the name is not available. The Facebook help page has a section on it, but it's basically just a long winded way of saying, "Too bad for you."
Is there anything I can do? I vaguely remember making an abortive attempt at setting up a Facebook page for EvC Forum around a year ago, and maybe it owns the evcforum username, but I can't find that page anywhere. Maybe I never clicked on some authorization link that was email'd to me.

I've exhausted my graphical abilities. The logo was created by TrueCreation, I have no talents in that area myself.

Yes, that would work, but my graphical gifts only go as far as Windows Paint, which no longer has transparency capability. There used to be something in older versions under image options that would allow you to choose a transparency color.
Anyway, what's in there now isn't too bad. If anyone wants to take a stab at improvements go right ahead. I'll put it up and we'll see how it looks.

That's pretty good. The "Understanding Through Discussion" portion needs to move because it will overlap the "EvC Forum Community" portion on the lower left and the "Like" and other menu items on the lower right. And there's a white line at the top. And it should be bigger because when scaled up to fit the space you begin to see distracting artifacts, particularly around the letter borders.

Name Change
I changed the Facebook name from "EvC Forum" to "Evolution versus Creationism" because of the Facebook search feature. Even though I associated the page with the evolution and creationism topics, a search for evolution did not bring up our page. With the new name a search still does not bring up our page, but searching for both evolution and creationism does.
Either I still have a lot to learn about Facebook searches, or their search facility is pretty weak.

Send it to Admin, I'll upload it to the website and post it to this thread - thanks!
AbE: Since you're the proven talent in this area, and since it's time for a new logo anyway, maybe you want to take a shot at a new logo?

Further Concerns about Facebook Searching
Since a day has passed, I assume Google has indexed Facebook, but Google searches for phrases on our page get back a "No results found." I searched for these phrases, including the double quotes:
  • "EvC Forum brings creationists and evolutionists"
  • "EVC is Facebook official"
After a little more experimenting using Google to search for phrases on random Facebook pages I've come to the conclusion that you can't use Google to search the content of Facebook pages. You can find people and pages, but not content. Does that sound right?
I just found the advanced Facebook search and using the "Contains" box found "EVC is Facebook official", which is in a post, but it couldn't find "EvC Forum brings creationists and evolutionists", which is in the "About" section.
Does anyone know how to do a Facebook search that includes the "About" section?
I am finding Facebook unintuitive.

Re: Further Concerns about Facebook Searching
RAZD writes:
But your purpose is to attract people to this forum, not to have discussions on facebook, yes?
The goal is that Facebook searches for terms related to the creation/evolution debate will include our Facebook page in the search results. So far I'm not even close. The only searches that find us are "evolution creationism" and "evolution versus creationism".
And it will become infuriating as it organizes things their way.
I don't mind the difference between my way and someone else's way. What I mind is a bad way. How did Facebook become so popular? Is the enigmatic behavior and indeterminism part of the allure for the LCD?
I am really impressed with their image acquisition capabilities. I hope to implement something just as easy for here so members can easily add images to their account from their own machine or the web.
