Re: Subduction Zone Nuclear Disposal?
If we believed in God enough to ask Him for the solution He'd give it. Of course anything we do would involve work and study as well, that's never ignored with prayer.
First of course there is no perfectly safe solution, that has to be acknowledged, and certainly not if you're expecting it to last millions of years, or even thousands for that matter. What is wanted is the safest solution we can come up with. I had an email exchange with someone who knows more about it than I do, who believes Yucca is the safest solution we have. I sent him the link to the blog RAZD highlighted.
Well, he won't mind if I post his email:
Of course, This should have all been sorted out before they built the first nuclear power plant... Typical political / government planning.
There are over 70 reactors in the country which are storing waste in temporary, extremely vulnerable containers, mostly in moist climates.. Even if it was not already contaminated, a dry, remote desert would be better than what we have now.. The waste is supposedly going to be incased in lead- lined impermeable glass containers, so the likelihood of a fracture allowing escape of radioactivity seems pretty remote to me.. I also think the clammer over transportation is over-blown.. There would be all sorts of restrictions.. Escorts, daytime-only, routes, etc.. The military has been hauling plutonium and bombs by ground, air and sea for 60 years without any real problems. A B52 actually crashed with an A-bomb on board without a problem...
