Re: The Duopoly
I'm not trying to defend against Microsoft's stupidity. But the Digital Rights Management wasn't really something that was being advertised. People dug through the policy and discovered them.
MS was very upfront with the DRM policies they were proposing. They had a webpage that explained all of it. All that existed before that was speculation, some of which was wrong.
But the internet saw through the bullshit and called them on it. DRM is to protect the company's profits by limiting the ways people can enjoy games besides going out and buying them.
Companies are trying to make a profit? Say it isn't so!!

Re: The Duopoly
And that is why I'm not buying a next gen system until my 360 craps out and I can't find a replacement anywhere.
I am actually thinking of buying another XBox360 once they start a firesale to offload the inventory in favor of the XBoxOne. That way I have two in case I get a red ring of death on my existing one, which is five years old.
And for the record, my first XBox 360 did succumb to the dreaded red ring of death in its second year. :-(

I'm lucky, my Xbox is about 6 years old (I got it when arkham asylum came out) and it's still doing ok. My brother on the other hand is on his third.

Re: The Duopoly
That's not really what I am talking about. My school of thought is that different companies offer goods, and you choose the goods that best fit your needs. Then there are those that think companies should do exactly what they tell them to do, or else.
Or else what? They don't buy their goods. Its still just choosing the goods that best fit your needs.
As a manufacturer, I want customers to tell me what they do and do not want. I'm on our complaint committee, I have guys calling me going: "Ya know, I really hate to complain but..." And I tell them: "No, please complain. I'm not aware that you're having a problem unless you tell me about it."
The original Xbox One policies were similar to Steam's policies, and less lenient in some instances.
Steam has never sold discs. DRM makes sense without physical data. Microsoft was going to spread the DRM onto the physical data, so to speak.
MS was very upfront with the DRM policies they were proposing.
But they were trying to act like they were implementing them to make the good better for us. That was a lie. Customers don't like being lied to.
Companies are trying to make a profit? Say it isn't so!!
Its not the end that was the problem, it was the means.

One of my all time favorite games of the past ten years by the way. :-)
I also played Arkham City and Arkham Origins. They were good but its hard to top the first one.
Hey, any Dead Space fans out there?

Current Sales
I just saw this article on Huffpost:
Xbox One Sales Top 2 Million Units Globally | HuffPost Impact
XBox One just surpassed two million units sold, nearly catching up to Sony selling 2.1 million units. Although it took XBox longer to reach a similar milestone. That can be attributed to slower turnaround time or a difference in desirability. But clearly, both are in very high demand.

Re: The Duopoly

Or else they will spend hours on internet forums repeating the same whines over and over.

Quite right, which made the original Xbox One policies a leg up on Steam. The whole vision of the original Xbox One policies was to treat discs the same as you would a download to get around problems with data caps and slow connections.
But they were trying to act like they were implementing them to make the good better for us. That was a lie.
This is the whining and entitlement I was talking about.
Its not the end that was the problem, it was the means.
I just found it funny that everyone thought Steam was so wonderful, but when a console moved towards the same policies it was the end of the gaming world.

People like to share discs on consoles. Microsoft tried to prevent that to make more money. It was a dick manuver. People called them out on it.
And can't you still play Steam games in off-line mode?

Yes, these poor people are being exposed to companies claiming that they have improved their products.

I just saw a bunch of spoiled gamers. I guess our views differ on this one.

Straw Poll
As far as I can tell the PS4 is winning the initial propaganda battle over XBoxOne. Now I claim no expertise here. I've barely touched video games since I had kids. My last console was the PS2. But a lot of the guys I work with are avid gamers and they are all plumping for the PS4 (even those who used to be XBoxers). Kids a bit older than my own all seem to be getting PS4s for XMas. The site where I work has a huge 'GAME' shop (vid game chain here in the UK) and there were queues out the door on PS4 launch day but not so much on XBoxOne release day. Generally friends who are into these things (i.e. those without kids yet) are on a bit of a downer about the new XBox.
Is this anecdotal evidence misleading? Or do sales figures etc. bear any of the above out?
As a vaguely interested observer.........

The latest and greatest unknowns
Straggler writes:

Really, it's too early to tell. Those kinds of figures just aren't available at the moment. Right now, all we can go on is the vendor's media statements. Which, of course, are going to favour whichever vendor they come from.
This decent article on the Numbers Game sort of runs through all the lastest remarks.
My favourite part:
quote:
But given how relatively close both systems remain, however you spin those figures, this is all pretty much sturm und drang posturing for the sake of narrative momentum. If you want to know how things are going to shape up in the months to come, you’ll want to have a look at each console-maker’s software lineup. It’s what’s on tap in 2014 that’ll determine whether one system’s able to bolt ahead of the other.
So, as they say in my line of work: "Hurry up and wait."
The "internet vibe" in my not-all-that-connected-anyway-opinion (I read, like, 4 comments) is that PS4 is kicking ass in all areas. But I dunno.
And, some funny headlines from my rummaging around on the interworlds:
Despite rumors to the contrary, you can't make your Xbox One backwards compatible by entering in a series of button presses. You can, however, potentially brick your system
if you just like to watch the world burn, there is a mod that allows you to use your PlayStation 4 controller on Xbox One

Re: The latest and greatest unknowns
Mini Summary for those who do not like to click on links.
(From what I can tell):
MS = Microsoft = Xbox One
PS = PlayStation = PS4
  • both MS and PS have sold approximately 2 million systems
  • both companies are currently limited by production availability
  • MS sold "more" in the US... but they only sold to the US to start with where PS did a world-wide launch (MS's 2 million boxes were focused on the US where PS's 2 million boxes were more evenly distributed globally).
  • MS has a higher gross amount of money they are pulling in... but MS's system costs $100 more, so if sales are even-enough it's obvious that MS would be pulling in a higher gross amount
  • PS "sold more in November" (first month when both systems launched)... but PS did have a 9-day headstart on sales, so it's pretty obvious that they would have sold more in November.
  • both systems are working good-enough for the average user
  • both systems are having original-release issues and it's obvious that both will have significant software/firmware updates in the near future
  • in the US, MS is historically favoured (I think this is slight?)
  • in Europe, PS is historically favoured (I think this is more-than-slight?)
But still, at this point, only time will tell...

Console Availability
Just a little sidebar observation on my part:
I happened to stop into the local Toys R Us, Best Buy, Target and Walmart that are near where I live. I curiously was looking at that areas where the new consoles are being displayed.
What was interesting is that I found Xbox One consoles at Best Buy and Target that were in stock. However, at every single store, not one PS4 was available.
Now I realize this is just a local example, but I did find it interesting. I don't know if there is a general demand bias towards the PS4 or if production is merely out of sync right now.

Latest News
PS4 outsells XBox One by 40% in 2013
2013 PS4 Sales: 4.2 million
2013 XBox One Sales: 3 million
Rumours:
-PS4 sold 2.1 million in first-few-weeks, and then another 2.1 million after that
-XBox One sold 2 million in first-few-weeks, and then another 1 million after that
-Therefore, XBox One sales are declining faster than PS4 sales
-XBox One was outsold even by Wii U (Nintendo's latest) during the last week before Christmas
-Wii U sales are not very impressive, therefore XBox One being outsold by Wii U is telling...
Go Playstation!!

Re: Latest News

Yes, I read that too.
Very interesting. I am wondering how things will play out next year. One thing to note is that folks who use Mr. Softie products often take a wait and see attitude before committing to new versions of things. Like waiting to upgrade to the latest Windows. I wonder if some of the lower sales are attributed to that. (I certainly adhere to that philosophy!)
Also, the games that are being released next year will be another catalyst for sales. Right now, PS4 has Killzone as an exclusive title, which is probably helping demand. XBoxOne doesn't have as good a selection, but there are some exclusive titles coming out next year like Halo 5 and Titanfall.
I am actually hoping both consoles do reasonable well, mostly because I want competition to exist. If one comes out way ahead of the pack, that doesn't always end up best for the consumer. (Sega anyone?)
