I'm disappointed that the world didn't come to an end. That would have been worth seeing.

12/12/12
OMG, it's God's favourite day of the century. Apart from 7/7/77 perhaps.
And he proved it by performing a miracle - today I didn't catch Ebola virus.

I spent my 12/12/12 12hr 12min 12 seconds eating a plate of fast food Chinese spicy beef. I was wanting something profound to text but was lacking as the moment passed. Ho hum.

One of 3. There is also one at the Naval Station in Maryland and one in Westford, Mass., where I used to work. They are linked up to each other and are constantly telling each other their status ("ooo, i'm falling behind a tad, better catch up to you guys" or "oops, getting ahead, better slow it up to fall back with you guys"). Accurate right down to a Gordon Lightfoot (1 nano second).
Adding a leap second every once in a while is NOT easy.

Last year we had 11/11/11 11:11:11. BUT!
====> hey it wasn't all 12's!
it was 2012/12/12 12:12:12 - the big 2000 in front if the year is a killer.
...maybe 2020? Nope:
2020/20/20 20:20:20 no month 20. clock is okay with the 24 hour day. some might say wait - 2020/20/20 is 2021/8/20 like today is January 349th.
so we could have a 2222/2/22 22:22:22 in the future....
What were they doing back in the year 1111 on 11/11 at 11:11:11? Did they even know? Were there still errors in the Calendar that were changing? And what of the Jewish year? The Chinese? The Australian Aboriginal calendar? Why not just go to the Big Bang then? Why even use Earth orbits to determine the length of a year?

I would guess that it is connected to seasons and agriculture.

On this Earth, yes. Of course. But why would it be logical over the entire universe as a whole? Who the hell are we to say what should prevail across the universe?
What would a logical time unit roughly the size of an Earth year be, independent of local orbiting systems? Hmm.

So today is 20/12 in 2012
(For the Yanks - Brits put the month before the year in the date. And the day before the month, so 9/11 was actually 11/9)
And, of course, it's the end of the world tomorrow according to the Mayans

Only if you did not wear one of my special Mayan Apocalypse Protection hats made of the finest nucleogenic materials gathered from ancient interstellar sources then enhanced with Pyramid Power.
I spent the better part of an hour folding these hats (using heavy aluminum foil and a paper hat method) , drawing up the signage and setting a price of $600.
Everyone in my office laughed at me (I do have that reputation. It was expected of me and I could not disappoint.) until I dropped the price to 10 cents whereupon everyone wanted one.
And they worked! Today, the 21nth, the 10:30 AM time of the apocalypse came and went, so did the fall back time of 3 PM, and we are all still here! Not only that but I made 80 cents directly and another $1.20 on credit!
Once again the power of science shines through!

The transition to the afterlife went pretty smoothly. I bet Faith, jaywill, et al. are surprised to see us heathens here.

It's synched with an atomic clock in Oxford (or somewhere)
Actually, no, it isn't. Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) is maintained by the USA and France -- I suspect that UTC was chosen since it matches neither the English nor the French names.
Though it's possible that that atomic clock in Oxford is a lower-stratum time reference that's used by the UK, though which still needs to be synched to the real time reference.
