Re: Whatcha think?
Seeing your minature version before the original, I thought it was a cute take on the vase by using two flat-faced and chinless apemen, which would be appropriate.

How about an apple? It symbolizes the Genesis narrative, and also symbolizes evolution --- as forbidden knowledge tabooed by religious fiat.
I tried doing one by shrinking a photo, and though it's not awful, it would probably be better to do one from scratch.

Re: Whatcha think?
Okay, the vase of a bust.
The galaxy I'll give a try tonight, but I'm already pretty sure it's too hard to tell what it is.
Can you do this: the Yin Yang symbol with EvC inside? It would be sort of like the earlier EvC attempts, but with a Yin Yang background, and the letters have to fit inside - maybe even be curved to conform to the circle.

God Awful Ugly
Try as I might I'm just not good enough. Need a real graphic artist. Or any kind of an artist, actually. Unfortunately neither one of them is me.
No room in 16 pixels. Whose crazy idea was that? Can we shoot him and make him die?

Re: God Awful Ugly
The ico file format was, IIRC, a standard developed by Microsoft.
Surprise.

Re: Whatcha think?
Looking at the 119 tabs I currently have open:
Only a couple of them have a photograph, and you wouldn't know what it was a photograph of unless someone told you.
Only half-a-dozen or so have pictures rather than symbols, and half of those wouldn't be recognizable unless you knew what they were. The others are pictures which are also simple well-recognizable symbols, such as a lightbulb to stand for a good idea.
The major and commercial sites which could afford a graphic designer almost exclusively use symbols or one or two letters rather than trying to summarize their content in a picture.
You've got a 16 by 16 canvas, you may be asking the impossible. If you really want something more expressive, what's wrong with my fish icon?

How much more of your browser window would you like taken up by stuff that is not the webpage you're actually trying to read?
The present system works out fine for the users, it's only frustrating for the website designer who wants his icon to be the ceiling of the Cistine chapel.

I had tried the fish icon myself, but reduced in size it looks like an amateurish stick figure. Your survey of your open tabs is consistent with what I've observed myself, so I think we're limited to at most a few letters, which would be EvC, or a single letter, or relatively simple symbols. The IEEE was actually able to fit all four letters in their icon and make them legible, but the NOAA (National Weather Service, I don't know how they get NOAA) just uses their symbol, and the NOAA portion is a white smudge.
There are some easily recognizable icons of the creation/evolution debate, like Noah's ark, the Darwin fish, the chimp-to-human march of progress, and others I'm sure that I can't bring to mind right now, and it would be nice to use one of those, but the only one I've had any luck with is Noah's ark.

Which I've actually liked the best so far: it was simple, easily recognizable, unique, and in the spirit of the forums.

Re: Whatcha think?
Except until it was actually explained to me never made any sense. In fact, only when I held my tongue just right and squinted just right and tilted my head just right, could I tell that was what it was supposed to be.

Anyone so limited that they can only spell a word one way is severely handicapped!

Surely that's what makes it ideal .. the Jesus fish and the Darwin tetrapod are stick figures.
the NOAA (National Weather Service, I don't know how they get NOAA)
"National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration". Which makes it sound like they run the weather.

A Lion?
Since there's a lion-like critter in the banner...
After some more serious examination, though, that thing in the banner looks like the offspring of a human-housecat interbreeding...

Alternative
Here's an alternative that's based on the existing site style and logo.

Re: Alternative
I personally like it. But what if you made the black transparent and got rid of the 'v' altogether?

Re: Alternative
As you wish
The edging needs to be retouched because it used to be on black but it will hopefully give you an idea of what it would be.
Here's another alternative that's more equal opportunity so people don't get upset about the E being above the C Animated gifs are supported by pretty much every modern browser as a favicon so it's an option.
