I just wanted to bring to the attention of the EvC Forum members of the sad fact that one of our country's gems has been dispoiled. The Smithsonian Museum has disgraced itself for the paltry fee of $16,000. This is the amount of money paid by the
... Discovery Institute, a group in Seattle that supports an alternative theory, "intelligent design," is announcing on its Web site that it and the director of the museum "are happy to announce the national premiere and private evening reception" on June 23 for the movie, "The Privileged Planet: The Search for Purpose in the Universe."
Full article here: Smithsonian to Screen a Movie That Makes a Case Against Evolution - The New York Times?
James Randi is offering $20,000 to the Smithsonian to return the DI's money and not show the film. Excerpt from Randi's webpage follows:
Readers, do something about this. Please send an e-mail to giving@si.edu addressed to Mr. Randall Kremer, Public Affairs. Tell him of your concern over this situation. And, you might add that the JREF is willing to donate $20,000 to the Smithsonian Institution if they agree to give back the "Discovery Institute" $16,000 and decline to sponsor the showing of the film. And the JREF will not require the Smithsonian to run any films or propaganda that favor our point of view...
The link to Randi's full article about this is here: Sucuri WebSite Firewall - Access Denied
I hope everyone here goes to Randi's webpage and sends an email to Mr Kremer voicing our displeasure.

This certainly falls in line with the "wedge" strategy of the IDists.
There has been an update to this story, from the Panda's Thumb:
Page not found · GitHub Pages
Statement by the Director, National Museum of Natural History
The Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History recently approved a request by the Discovery Institute to hold a private, invitation-only screening and reception at the Museum on June 23 for the film The Privileged Planet. Upon further review we have determined that the content of the film is not consistent with the mission of the Smithsonian Institution’s scientific research. Neither the Smithsonian Institution nor the National Museum of Natural History supports or endorses the Discovery Institute or the film The Privileged Planet. However, since Smithsonian policy states that all events held at any museum be co-sponsored by the director and the outside organization, and we have signed an agreement with this organization, we will honor the commitment made to provide space for the event.
Looks like the Smithsonian distanced itself from ID significantly.

Yet they still are co-sponsor. A sad day.

hi kjsimons,
I have just sent an email to the Smithsonian, but I didn't mention Randi's offer, as it appears to be ethically equivalent to what the Discovery Institute has done.
I hope that others contact the Smithsonian on this matter.
Mick

Other movies to show at the Smithonian.
I wonder why the Smithonian can't make better decisions about which movies will be screened in their institute. Regardless of wheter they support the view of the DI, they are still helping them to popularize their message. Maybe we should show some other great movies at the Smithonian:
  • A treatise on why Black people are less intelligent than White people.
  • A movie on how gay people destroy the fabric of society.
  • A documentary that shows the Holocaust did in fact not take place.
  • A movie that defends the virtues of Slavery.
And the list could go on and on...

I don't think they have distanced themselves enough. The best thing to do would be to return the money and not show the movie because they "have determined that the content of the film is not consistent with the mission of the Smithsonian Institution’s scientific research".
It's ok to have made a mistake as long as you correct it. To admit the shouldn't have agreed to show the film, but still show it is sends the wrong message.

I'm glad you sent off an email! I do think Randi's offer is ethically sound though we shouldn't have to bribe the government to not present religous propaganda in a federally funded science venue.

Re: Other movies to show at the Smithonian.
The thing that gets me is that they now admit they made a mistake but they feel that it is more important to honor the agreement then to stay true to mission of the Smithsonian to present science.

My email of dismay has been added to the list in this guy's inbox.
And I agree with your last comment. Apparently, their allegiance to their legal team is stronger than their allegiance to the community of scietnists they are supposed to serve.

Normally I don't care about what kind of material is "hosted" at public museums, especially for pay. But this rubbed me the wrong way all over the place.
The SI specifically states in its criteria for events that it will not allow commercial, religious, or partisan political functions to go on. Given that it has just admitted in its disclaimer that it is NOT science, all that is left is commercial, religious, and partisan political motives.
They got my email, for whatever it is worth.

Amazing. You guys intellecually are not much different than the old Catholic heirarchy, it seems.
And you claim to be willing to give ID a fair hearing?
LOL

What's "amazing" is your disregard for science.
The scientific community has given you a chance sir. Have you not read the numerous ID threads? We ask for the same thing over and over. These kinds of comments from the ID community drive me crazy.
