Re: Empirical evidence, existence, fact, proposition
yrreg
the only reason scientist proposed dark energy and dark matter is because somthing does not make sense in the universe.
what dosent make sense ?
Galaxies are spinning to fast for the gravity of their matter to hold them together, light is bending more than it is supposed to.....
if you throw a bunch of matter that you cannot see in to the mix it makes sense, though that does not prove that dark matter exsists it only tells us to go and look for it if we cant find it then it is a load of hogwash and something is wrong whit our understanding of how gravity works.
we know the universe is expanding ever faster we dont know why what is counteracting gravity it should be slowing down.
so that points us to look for something that is pushing stuff away we are calling it dark energy if we find and prove it hurray if not it is back to the drawing board to find out why this is happening
do you get it now

Right. And I have explained what the evidence is. So, clearly there is evidence.
Yrreg writes:
Is there the existence of empirical evidence proving the existence of dark matter and dark energy?
"Dark matter" is the name of a scientific mystery (of something unexplained). Similarly, "dark energy" is the name of another scientific mystery.
Clearly those mysteries exist.
If you are asking whether "dark matter" refers to a huge herd of black cats wandering around inside galaxies, then probably not but the fact is that we not currently have a complete explanation for the evidence that we see. That's why it is considered a mystery.
Yrreg writes:
And please, no need to bring in the word proposition, just keep to facts.
Well, I have been keeping to the facts. And the current situation is that we have evidence (that is, facts), but we do not currently have a complete explanation for that evidence (i.e. we are looking for more facts).
When we will have those additional facts, I cannot say. If it takes building a space ship to travel to a distant galaxy, then perhaps we will never have them. On the other hand, perhaps some new astronomical discovery will lead to an "Aha! Insight" moment.

Not Proven...

The title of this thread as given by me is:
Is there empirical evidence for dark matter and dark energy?
And the way I understand the title is conveyed in the following sentence also in my own words:
Is there the existence of empirical evidence proving the existence of dark matter and dark energy
Those are two separate questions. There is empirical evidence that dark matter and dark energy exist, but the evidence does not prove their existence.
Nearly every other poster has said something similar using different words. As per your request, I have not used the "p" word.
I'm more interested in your own acceptance of dark matter and energy as facts. I hope discussion of that is on topic here.
Edited by NoNukes, : No reason given.

Those two sentences do not convey the same meaning, and the 2nd sentence was not my understanding of the topic when I promoted it.
    Closing this down.
