Author | Topic: Hypocrisy at funerals | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

I find that non-Christians are more hypocritical at funerals. They'll say things like, "He's in a better place," even though they don't believe in such a place. Frankly I have found myself being highly hypocritical at funerals. But given that I see them as social occasions where those that need to hear such things are told such things - I rate my hypocrisy as limited and well intended. It just doesn't seem right to point out at someones funeral that instead of eternal raptuous joy ("eternal raptuous joy" - WTF! that sounds truly awful to me!!!) I am instead evidentially advocating that they will be nothing but worm food. What would you have me do not to be hypocritical?

I'm not sure in that situation that being hypocritical is not the correct response.

Are you telling me I am using the wrong term or what? Are you going to say anything other than "that's not hypocrisy? If I am using the wrong term, I will gladly admit that I am wrong. However, I think Ringo rightly slapped me into place and I started with the wrong premise.

I am instead evidentially advocating that they will be nothing but worm food. I actually thought about bringing this up at the funeral: about his place in the cosmos and doing his universal duty to replenish the universe with organic matter (something like that). Your god believes in Unicorns

Well your version sounds better than "worm food". But it amounts to the same thing.
I guess it is all in the delivery....

My father-in-law was non-religious and, in his younger days, quite the party animal. He liked to say, "I know where I'm going when I die!" - meaning that he was going straight to hell.
The preacher at his funeral, who had never met him, had been told the quote above by some relative but without context. It might have even been spun to mean "to heaven." Doing a good preacherly job, the good rev. made this a pretty big, inspiring piece of his sermon. My poor wife came close to getting the giggles at her own daddy's funeral. She knew him well, after all.

I'm saying that none of the believers at the funeral were being hypocritical. They may well be inconsistent, incorrect, inept, even illogical, but none of those rise to hypocrisy.
They are following through on their personal hopes and beliefs. The problem is that you set the topic as "Hypocrisy at funerals" and so far have not presented many examples that fit that topic except your participation in the funeral. If you had made the topic "hooah212002s hypocrisy at a funeral" then it would have been both relevant and accurate. I also think it would be perfectly correct behavior and the right thing to do. Can it be both correct and hypocritical?

Is this your way of telling me I am the hypocrite here? Heh, no.That was my way of agreeing with you

I'm saying that none of the believers at the funeral were being hypocritical. They may well be inconsistent, incorrect, inept, even illogical, but none of those rise to hypocrisy. Which is why I contemplated changing the topic title way back in Message 22. I realize the point I was trying to get across didn't fit the way I worded the topic or the title. Though I think you are only saying this to either be nitpicky or argue semantic.
If you had made the topic "hooah212002s hypocrisy at a funeral" then it would have been both relevant and accurate. I also think it would be perfectly correct behavior and the right thing to do. You're funny. I already explained to you why I went. Not only that, but the reasons others have stated that a non-believer would be a hypocrite don't fit me. You still haven't said why either I am a hypocrite or why YOU think I was wrong in my topic. That's ok though, the other participants have shown me the error of my ways and I accept that. (I know that probably all sounded very rude and I assure you I had know ill intent) Edited by hooah212002, : No reason given. Your god believes in Unicorns

I am married.
But the marriage in question was about as non-religious and low key as one could imagine. Myself, my "wife" (as it still seems strange to call her) and our 4 guests/witnesses got the bus to central London after the registry office thing, had a swanky meal and that was that. Our all-but-nothing ceremony was preceded by a gay civil partnership that was much more of a "do". As for marriage - No difference to my life except in the practical terms that it was intended to facilitate.

Tell the truth? I know I do. It's how you sell it mate. What would you have me do not to be hypocritical? When they need comfort, don't tell them they're in a better place, tell them they feel no more pain and suffering, that they're "at peace" now. They are, just not in the way the one getting the answers think you mean it. Like I said, it's all how you sell it.

The only thing I could think to tell his mom was that every day is a new day and you can only hope the next one is better than the last.

You could've said: "His days of suffering are over now. There are no more bad things for in store for him."
Or something like that. No reason to be a hypocrite when giving comfort.
