Spic and Span?
onifre writes:
...and me the spic.
If it was just you and Jackson as a team, then I'd suggest "Spic and Span" because:
quote:
A slur derived from "spic" is "spic and span" (first used in the African-American community in the 1950s) meaning a mixed Puerto Rican and African-American couple.
See here.
I don't think we have the cleaning product here, but "spick and span" is understood as "neat" or "clean". I doubt if your acts are particularly clean, but the American "neat", sort of meaning "cool", is well understood. It might arouse curiosity because of the missing "k", so it gives you a "why we call ourselves this" story to tell.
Forrest Shaw could capitalize on his first name, which kind of sounds American to us. What kind of folks would call a kid "Forrest"?
He must have interesting roots, but he sounds like a bit of a stick in the mud.*
"Stick, Spic and Span"?
*(I didn't know it had seven meanings)!

But us Brits like to moan about people (including ourselves!).
That doesn't mean we want a bunch of Americans moaning about us.

Re: Londonitis
London is about as multi-cultural as it comes in world terms. But frankly so is most of the UK in terms of places you are likely to actually play?
NYC and LA, yes. Maybe Austin, TX and Atlanta, GA also. Other than that, no. Just white, black, hispanic for most of the rest.
I get that.
But I actually meant the places you are likely to play in the UK. I am assuming that you will be sticking to the centres of big city urban hubs rather than touring tinpot towns and villages as a UK based comedy posse might do.
London, Manchester, Birmingham....
I guess student gigs (if you do any of those) might be a bit less varied in terms of audience depending which unis you play at.
That material I feel will translate well, but for the other stuff - is American pop cutlure, news, politics well known in the UK?
Shit yeah!!! We still have fucking 'Friends' playing virtually non-stop on our TV channels along with all the other sitcoms past and present, American movies are as well known here as there, we have LA based gossip followers as part of the morning news etc. In fact you could make jokes about the dominance and pervasity of such things and everyone would get it.
Another concern is our actual promo-kit and the video clips we use... Would a UK audience like to hear more about US celebrity news, war, American politics???
Yeah all of the above. The details of your political system might be a bit lost on many (Senators, governors, house of representatives etc. - I wouldn't know who does what or why without looking stuff up) - But stuff about Obama, Clinton, Bush will go down well as will anti-war stuff and celeb stuff.
The Star Spangled Wankers springs to mind......
Actually, that's not bad for t-shirts.
Now I know you are humorin me!!!
If you want a T-shirt idea I would suggest the "Stars and Stripes" tour but with the appropriate bits graffiti style crossed out and added to make it read the "Bars and Strippers" tour.
A Banksy style logo.
Anyway - Ignore me. I am well hungover and just ranting random drivel now.

What? You can't smoke here either?
What would the UK appreciate hearing from US comics, or for what reason would they come see US comics?
I don't think you need to be too self-deprecating. US comics are not a novelty over here. There's a few US comics who live and work here more or less permanently and are well-known on TV. Taking the piss out of both our countries, and pointing out the differences, can work well if it's done in a balanced sort of way.
I think British people love to know how other countries, particularly the USA, view our country and our people. So any kind of observational material on Britain from an American perspective would be good.
And religion is always fair game!

I agree.
But we don't like that sucky bullshit about how great it is here. It sounds false and patronising and we know it isn't particularly true.
Not that I can imagine Oni and his mates being into that sucky kinda thing. I am guessin they will be more into analysing why everything and everywhere is bit crap.

It could be quite refreshing if they visit my part of the country, because they won't know much about it and so we won't have to hear the usual jokes about everyone in Norfolk being too closely related.
Oh shit...

Heh, that reminds me of something fuinny over here. We also have a smoking ban in our bars and stuff since last year. Of course , in true Dutch fashion we're still smoking there anyway (I don't smoke, by the way), but the funny thing was that this led to the fact that you couldn't smoke a normal cigarette inside a coffeeshop (the place where you get weed here), but you could smoke a cigarette made of pure weed. I think they remedied it now by allowing you to smoke normal cigarettes in coffeshops, but this has led to other bars protesting that you are not allowed to smoke in their establishments. What it all boils down to is that due to the "tolerance policy" (gedoogbeleid) here in The Netherlands, they've created a nice little judicial mess.

Of the suggestions so far I'd favor Star Spangled Wankers or America's Least Wanted, probably the latter.
Me too. Star Spangled... I'd like for t-shirts.
Call yourselves Charlie's Frightened Yak, who cares?
A booker cares. For the simple reason that they see the audience like TV sees us, groups of people with common interests. Names like "Blue Collar..." are specific to gather the masses via catchy names and shit like that.
Plus three asshole from America with no name recognition isn't going to put asses in seats.

Hope this offers some launch pads.
This was great stuff, Larni. That's what I was looking for. The material I do that fits what you describe only goers over well in NYC, but I got a shitload of it so I can use it with the brits.
Thanks, friend.

The Dutch for one won't give a flying fuck about cursewords. You can say "fuck" on television here without getting bleeped, yes, on prime time.
