After making 33 posts, I have been given a member rating of 1.
I have not abused anyone or accused anyone. Nor have I insulted anyone. I have not violated any rules here. So I am a bit puzzled at the value and meaning of this rating. May be it carries no value and has no meaning. Why then is it there?
It is (or rather was) there because at that point only one person had rated only one of your posts, and they had given it a 1.
Since your post ratings determine your member rating, and that was the only post rating you had, naturally your member rating was also 1.

Be nice now. At the time Europa posted his/her message, the "1" rating may well have been reality. That rating can change fast as others also do ratings.
Haha, sorry. It was a joke, but I guess it didn't get through.

Meaning = someone didn't like your posts or just wanted to be a dick.
May be it carries no value and has no meaning. Why then is it there?
Because Percy/Admin writes all the software for this board and wants to sell it someday. Therefore he has to test stuff like this, because some people who will be using his software would like to use something like ratings.
This member rating of 1 discourages me from participating in this forum. It is not the figure that is an issue, it is the rating itself that is an issue for me. I feel insulted and offended.
May I suggest you do as Chopper recommend: harden the fuck up.
I also feel I should get the message and move on to the next forum where I will not be judged or rated.
harden the fuck up.
It saddens me because I have just started to enjoy this forum.
Then stay, nobody fucking cares about the ratings.
I think there are some intelligent souls here and I have had the opportunity to debate with some of them. I must admit that my experience here is a lot of fun and I genuinely enjoyed it.
Then what do you care about the ratings? Does a number under your name really mean that much.
As far as I know, this is a forum where people can debate and discuss issues. This is not a forum restricted to particular points of view. So, expressing one view or the other should not be taken as an opportunity to rate someone low or high. As long as someone has not violated the rules of the forum, he or she should not get discouraged by the system of the forum.
It's the internet, get used to it.
I agree I am in no way compelled to be a member here. I understand that I am free to stay or leave. I also am aware that most people will advice me to leave if I am not happy with how things are here.
I'm not. I advise you to grow a pair and stay.
But I just thought I will let you know of what concerns me. Not many people would have done it, I am sure. Most people would have quietly walked away.
Just stay dude, your ratings been raised anyway, you happy now?
In my humble opinion, if you want more people to join your forum and stay here, abolishing the 'Member Rating' will prove beneficial.
Like I told you in the other thread, it will be changed so only positive ratings can be given.

Maybe change isn't a bad idea?
I write posts about evolution and an old earth, and when I have the time and inclination I will also discuss other subjects such as spirituality, epistemology, and the paranormal. I get poor message ratings for the latter and high message ratings for the former. I suspect all I would have to do is go to the Coffee House and talk about ghosts again, and my member rating would fall. One of our most esteemed posters, RAZD, has a low-ish rating that is undeserved because he also has sometimes defended an unpopular position in epistemology and theism threads. What's usually being rated is the poster's ideology, rather than the actual quality of the posts.
I think it's not a bad idea to let people rate individual messages, but I don't see a need for the posters themselves to be rated.
(ABE) All these posts saying harden up, get a backbone (you wussy) etc -- how very testosterone-fuelled male. I wonder what other women on the forum think. Purpledawn?

I'm not so sure this would be the case: I never bang on about woo woo being real but my score is lower than yours so you must be doing something right (independent of your position).

About the Upcoming System
I'm going to repeat just a little bit of information about how the rating system will change, but please keep in mind I can't commit to a date. There's only one of me.
Our post-of-the-month system is manual, and the new rating system option will automate this. Rather than rating a message you'll nominate it for post-of-the-month. The number of nominations will be displayed with the message. Nominated posts will appear in the post-of-the-month forum. Winners of post-of-the-month will see a little icon (a star or some such) displayed with the rest of their member information. The star would also be a link to that message. Someone who acquired a bunch of stars would be an amazing individual.
The software will make possible other time periods than just a month. There could be post-of-the-day, week, month, year, decade. I'm unsure how best to take advantage of this possibility right now.

Europa, let me tell you something that will make you feel better.
Ever since Percy came out with the new rating system, I have made it my personal mission to give out as many 1's as possible. I've been giving out 1 to random people and their posts. But I just gave you a 5 because I felt bad for you. That's the first non-1 I have given ever since the ratings got started.
You should feel honored that you got to my sympathy side.
Added by edit.
There, I just gave every post in this thread a 1 except your OP. The point is no one cares about the rating. It's a popularity contest, and most of us should have gotten over it once we left high school.

That sounds really good. I have often wished in other forums that I could do something to highlight well-written and insightful posts. I'd be tempted to ask for the ability to click a "this is bollocks" button too, but even the negative recognition is more than many messages of that type probably deserve

Huntard got it right.
First, you're the man with that video.
Second, I'd like to respond with a 'ditto-head" to everything you wrote, but I hate Rushbo & everything he stands for so all I can do is bask in your glory. Sorry.
Third, and here I go burying the lede; ratings mean NOTHING, Europa. I have a rating of 5 - for whatever reason - and I'm just a low level poster with little training in the biological/cosmological/geological sciences that many folks here have attained. I just enjoy reading various threads here, and have for many years. Science has much to grant me, even though what I learn here will never affect my career & current job. I'm just here for the kicks.
Fourth - keep the ratings & upgrade as necessary, IMHO, Percy. I still like my 5, even though I'm sure with this post it'll slip. Shit happens.
Fifth - *shrugs* I just needed a fifth, so I can share it with Oni.

Amazing, perhaps, but nevertheless, assuredly an evolutionist, which is somewhat of the same ole. It would, however, thwart our resident Taz-manian Devil in his attempt to crash the system.

LOL, Taz. I've designated self to go about doing community service with pooper scooper fives, cleaning up your messes the best I can, fiveasizing the ones into threesies. You end up with ones with me and the rest get threes or so.

Re: About the Upcoming System
I'm not being funny; but how many seconds would it take to turn off the existing system? Or at least the display of it. I'm assuming you have a function that spits out the bit under your name? Just make it spit out a blank line instead of Member Rating: x.x
Just get rid of it now.

Agreement
The current system is worthless. I don't need anyone else's ratings to tell me which posts or members I should like. I have a mind of my own, and I like my opinions better than anyone else's, so what's the point?
On the other hand, it's good to have an easy way where members can repost posts that they think are good on a Good Post Thread, whether its a Post Of The Month Thread, a Post Of The Year Thread, or just a Hey Look At This Cool Post Thread. On forums that have this facility, I do like to look at that thread, because it calls my attention to witty or informative or provocative posts that I wouldn't otherwise have seen because I wasn't participating in the threads that those posts were originally posted on. So that system really makes my experience of a forum better.
The present system doesn't do anything for me.
