The commentator has just said:
"Oh! Bell has just been beaten outside off stump" A common-or-garden cricketing phrase which may confuse outsiders somewhat. A classic line delivered by the commenter, Brian Johnson, during an England vs West Indies game where Micahael Holding was facing the bowling of Peter Willey: "the batsman's Holding, the bowlers Willey" And the funniest thing that has ever been heard on radio: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2aIagPztV-sLife, don't talk to me about life - Marvin the Paranoid Android |

What's a Pimm? And how many can you get in a jug? A Pimm is a sort of cheerful cockney chimney sweep, and it depends on the size of the jug.

So, fun fact, Root has now faced more balls this innings than the entire Australian team.

Pub quiz question for all: Which two countries played the first ever cricket international? Carthage v. the Roman Republic, 47 B.C. Game abandoned due to elephants on the pitch. In vengeance, the Romans would sow the field with salt and decapitate the Phoenician XI during the Third Punic War.

The best movie I can recall that mentions cricket is The Lady Vanishes

Seems like jargon for the sake of pedantry, which would be pathetic.

It's only pathetic jargonistic pedantry if you are not one of those "in on it". Which you aren't. As one of those who is I am quite happy with that situation because we don't want you anyway.

So, no new ball taken and no declaration by stumps.
Will England declare or will Root be given a chance to get 200? Usually we can expect the weather to help make the decision but another two days of heat and sun seem assured. Personally. I'd like England to bat it out then spin the Ozzies out for under 100 on a disintegrating wicket.Life, don't talk to me about life - Marvin the Paranoid Android

It's more an example of the evolution of language within groups. There is as much specialized jargon in baseball, but those who grow up within the jargon speaking community won't notice it.Fundamentalism - the anti-American, anti-Christian branch of American Christianity

Dr. Adequate writes: Carthage v. the Roman Republic, 47 B.C. Game abandoned due to elephants on the pitch. In vengeance, the Romans would sow the field with salt and decapitate the Phoenician XI during the Third Punic War. That certainly would be a surprise. But you're 1891 years out. The first cricket international was the U.S.A. vs Canada, played at a New York cricket club. Cricket was bigger than baseball in the U.S. until around the time of the civil war. It was introduced in colonial times. George Washington and his troops played it during the war of independence.

Well Root didn't get his double ton but Aus are one wicket down with 2 days to go. Swann to spin the rest out must be the plan.

Gerry Pimm of Northwood town cricket club is not the sort of chap to get into a jug.

Swann first over gets one out. 32 for 2 and looking good for England.
