Sorry robin, you just brought back a bad memory for me of 11th grade english.
Look at the bright side. When I was in high school, we had to read that book in 9th grade.
Now that I am much older and have read many thousands of books (I have a habit of starting a book and finish it the same day... just can't put it down) I still think it was one of the crappiest books ever written. The worst book I can think of is Demons by Dosteovski (sp?).

This is all very interesting, don't get me wrong, but I'm forced to engage irony mode and moderate this thread.
For once, just let people go at it. People are talking off topic, but these off-topics are derived from the original topic. I'd rather see them spend a page or two at it than starting another thread.

"goddidit" is not evidence
iano writes:
And if someone wants to say "Godidit" then that is as good an evidence as any.
I don't see how this can be true... this is anassertion, not evidence. you then need to provide evidence to back up this assertion, or show how the evidence led you to this conclusion.
dictionary.com writes:
1. A thing or things helpful in forming a conclusion or judgment: The broken window was evidence that a burglary had taken place. Scientists weigh the evidence for and against a hypothesis.
2. Something indicative; an outward sign: evidence of grief on a mourner's face.
'goddidit' is not evidence.

My favorite essay in this anthology is, "Do Horses Gallop in their Sleep?"
I think so, yes.

As you should supposing that English Teacher is some absolute entity which usurps all else. A person finds something which they come to understand usurps all else and they are meant to subvert this to a "job title". But, per definition, the job title is subserviant to what they have found out. Then what?
Iano, do you ever get tired of sophistry?

I am a voracious reader but I just couldn't get through that book.
I saw (in 11th grade English!) a very good dramatization of The Scarlet Letter after we had spent weeks reading the book and being tested on it.
I remember thinking, "Oh, so that's what was going on in that part."
Hawthorne seems to break the one of the cardinal rules of good storytelling as I've heard them; "Show, don't tell."
