Re: So What's Wrong With Sustained Irony?
I'm out of time this morning and don't have time to look at the thread, but it sounds like it would be worth it if Adminnemooseus wants to give the issue a second look.

I don't doubt that in the least. We certainly don't need threads like Oetzi or the Grand Canyon or Salt Domes or How to make Sand or How to support Creationism or Coffee Memories or So let's look at why the Islamic world might be annoyed by the West? or Looking for the Super-Genome. -And it ain't found or The world and environment 5767 years ago.
Let's restrict topics to discussions of cats or the latest news from KKRAP. It is certainly unreasonable to expect the membership at EvC to be able to understand irony or recognize parody or to check sources. God forfend we see threads that encourage thinking or questioning.
On a similar note:
quote:
Associated Scientific Press 11-05-06 16:42 Patagonia, Argentina: Historia Compuesta
It's been reported that scientists working on the newly discovered species of snake, Najash rionegrina, used an MRI on the remains. Early indications show a completely developed larynx of surprising sophistication, far more mammalian than any seen in any serpents.
Dr Jesus Me'Deocre Falsificado said, off the record, that the one thing that was most surprising was that it was almost as though the mucosa had been removed. "Without the mucosa the creature would have been unable to utter even a sound. However, we are planning additional MRI and Cat Scans and there may be indications of a vestigial mucosa."
The findings will be published in a future edition of Historia Compuesta.

I disagree with Adminnemooseus concerning the closing of the thread Message 24. Not so much because the thread was closed but rather the reasons behind such actions.

I believe such an attack upon the person, who however mischievously promotes, sustained irony is completely unwarranted.
Quoting my entire topic closing message:

Going to close it down.
I also suggest that Jar, in general, be much more selective in his starting of new topics. I've had thoughts that his new topics permissions should be suspended.
If anyone wished to present a case why it should be reopened, to to the "Thread Reopen Requests" topic, link below.
Other discussion - Go to the "General discussion..." topic, link also below.
Adminnemooseus
The reason I closed the topic was stated by the subtitle.
My comment about Jar's topic startings was a more general impression, and possibly wrong. That impression has preceded the current topic in question. It wasn't that I was saying Jar didn't also start topics of high merit.
Had Jar presented his case in the "Thread Reopen Requests" topic intead of starting a new version, I or another admin would have reopened the topic. It would have been nice had Jar presented that new version information in the original topic. I guess I don't tolerate "cryptic" well.
Adminnemooseus
Added by edit: Upon further (re)review I observe that, regardless of where the original topic started, it sure seems to have "gone to hell" down thread - seemingly going far astray of Jar's topic intentions. Probably enough reason in itself, to close the topic.

Coffee House Threads
This is the first I was aware that members could initiate threads in Coffee House. I noted often that members would request Coffee House in the PNT forum and just assumed that was the rule.
Prehaps this priviledge could be abused, but I suppose there's ways to prevent that. My apologies to Jar for the mistake.

Re: Coffee House Threads
You're not really wrong, Buz. There's nothing that precludes someone from submitting a Coffee House topic to the PNT process. It's just not actually required.

"ongoing crankiness"
it's a waste, since i can't get my 24 hours back
but. since when is "ongoing crankiness" against the forum rules?
or should i assume it really translates to "inconsistent use of shift key"?
i would also like to mention that i was ignored by an admin upon emailing this question nearly 24 hours ago.

Little help, please.
If I want to express my opinion that life is digital first and chemical second on this threat I should be allowed to without having to suffer your literary yeast infection.

I have asked HM to stick to the topic. He has refused and has resorted to ad hominem.
If someone would issue him a warning, I would appreciate it.

Re: Little help, please.
That's what happens when you don't write a good opening post.
Since you only want to discuss the book, I have moved the thread to the Book Nook.
It would be nice if you provided your own review of the book following the admin msg.
Hope this helps.

I disagree. Having quickly browsed several of the books in The Book Nook, my OP is typical.
HM is the problem. Hoot always acts trollish in my threads.
Teen4christ had no problem taking his questions to the appropriate thread.
And nwr is very nearly the perfect poster.
It would be nice if you provided your own review of the book following the admin msg.
Again. Of the first 10 books posted, only 2 offered reviews.
If someone is interested in reading the book and posting their thoughts, they are more than welcome to do so.

Re: "ongoing crankiness"
There are message boards out there where about any manner of communication and demeanor is acceptable. Some like EvC work to maintain civility. Were you ever in a home full of cranky people? I have and it's not pleasant. That's what it would be like if all members were like you every time they got riled.
Imo this action was for your good and the good of all who participate and read.

like that means anything.

[qs]Imo this action was for your good and the good of all who participate and read.[qs] that's so quaint. but still. what part of the forum guidelines forbid "ongoing crankiness"?

OK, I will.
Hoot Mon, you're a bad, bad person. If I were you I'd be ashamed of myself, and since I am me I am personally ashamed of you. But this forum is needs a little help from the bad people now and then. Otherwise, it's about a pleasant as a daily colonoscopy.

Yes and no. You have some admirable qualities which perhaps would be good for some of the rest of us.

Maybe some members are just too flammable.
(Amazing how you can misspell "inflammatory" even when you quote it. )
King Solomon said something like a soft answer turns away wrath.
quote:
Pro 15:1 A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.
That cuts both ways. A soft answer turneth away brenna's wrath too.
