Re: popups?

Drastic solution.
Actually, it wasn't because of the popups. It was time for another reformatting.
You backed up your hard drive, then rebooted from your system CD, reformatted your hard drive, then reinstalled the operating system from the system CD, then restored your data from backup, then reinstalled all the little miscellaneous programs and utilities that most people like, like messenger programs, iTunes, etc. Is that roughly correct?
Yes to all the above.
But anyway, I solved the problem. I'm not going to tell you what it was. I'm afraid everyone will laugh at me.

Disappearing threads
I hope someone is onto this. Threads have been disappearing.

Can you be more specific? Which threads? Which fora are they in?

dBcode (not) not working - Suspension not working
Re: PallK's message:

Did everything really come from nothing? I mean really absolutely [b]nothing[\b]. No space, no time, no other dimensions. No forces, no matter, no energy. No equation obeying abstract concepts. No laws. No rules. No . . consciousness? NOTHING. Really? [/quote]
The above is his quote within another quote box. Both at the source and here, the code isn't working correctly, and I don't see why.
Also, being suspended doesn't seem to stop me from posting or editing, although it does stop me form doing anything at "Board Central".
Not as suspended as I thought,

ps: Nevermind about the dBcode problem. I now see that there is a backslash where there should be a normal slash. Let's try it with that fixed:

It really helps moderators figure out if a topic is disintegrating because of general misbehavior versus someone in particular if the originally non-misbehaving members kept it that way. When everyone is prickly and argumentative and off-topic and personal then it's just too difficult to tell. We have neither infinite time to untie the Gordian knot, nor the wisdom of Solomon.
There used to be a comedian who presented his ideas for a better world, and one of them was to arm everyone on the highway with little rubber dart guns. Every time you see a driver doing something stupid, you fire a little dart at his car. When a state trooper sees someone driving down the highway with a bunch of darts all over his car he pulls him over for being an idiot.
Please make it easy to tell you apart from the idiots. Source

Return of the not-bumping problem.
I just posted two new messages to the thread The "Circle of the Earth", but the thread has not been bumped to the top of the All Topics page.
In both cases, after writing these messages, it was taking too long for the page displaying the new messages to load, so I clicked the "stop loading" button after I made sure the messages existed. I've done this before, and this didn't create this problem in theose previous times.

Fixed - Did a forum data rebuild for the "The Bible:..." forum. Currently doing same for all the other forums, just in case.

Attn. Percy - "The Bible:..." forum in general is not automatically updating
The problem happens for at least 2 topics. After new message is posted, the page will not reload, although the message does post. Will not update on "All Topics" without a forum data rebuild at "Board Central".

Searching
How come searching basically doesn't work at all? I just put in Search Words: "swimming" and Search by User Name: Crashfrog, and I got two messages:
this one and this one
neither of which actually contains the word "swimming." That word doesn't even appear on either of those pages, in anybody's message. And the message that I was actually looking for doesn't appear at all.
What's the deal? I know how to use a search engine, and expected behavior when you search for all posts by a particular person for a specific word is that you find the posts by that person that contain that word, not "two posts that have absolutely nothing to do with what you searched for."
I mean at least those were two posts by me, so at least they got it half-right. This is just one example but it's been my experience that EvC has the least accurate search engine of any forum I've ever posted at.

Re: Searching
EvC Forum's search facility is a victim of age and success. This is because as more and more messages accumulate, the search database for each forum becomes larger and larger. At a certain point it becomes too big to update before the webserver process times out. This causes corruption of various system files (like yesterday morning), and sometimes even crashes the server (again, like yesterday morning).
The fix is to delete the search database for the problem forum. The database again begins accumulating search data, but only for new messages. The deletion has to be done periodically for all the popular forums, so usually there isn't more than a year or two of searchdata available.
dBoard 3.0, hopefully to be released at the end of this year, fixes this problem by moving the search database (and all the messages, too) into MySQL.

What are the messages in now, incidentally?
Glad to hear about improvements on the way.

Now that the world* is on standard time . . .
why isn't the board?
From message 14 of my thread:
11-07-2007 03:29 PM
My computer time is right--it's currently 2:29 (Mountain Time). My profile is set to mountain time. I am logged in when I see this. When not logged in the site time is two hours ahead (Eastern Time). I'm assuming it would now be 3 hours ahead.
*except for those places that don't celebrate daylight savings time. May they rot in hell . .er . . celebrate the light
