I also like this idea...it would cut down on the clutter.

A common request is spell checking. I've just discovered the Google toolbar has a spellchecker that works with both Internet Explorer and FireFox. I just tested it in both browsers. It works fine in FireFox, but not Internet Explorer where everything works except correction. When you click on a highlighted misspelled word in Internet Explorer, nothing happens.
I have a feeling it actually works in Internet Explorer, but not with the beta 7.0 that I'm using. Unfortunately, when I installed Internet Explorer 7.0 I couldn't figure out how keep Internet Explorer 6.0 from being overwritten, so I can't test the Google spell checker with Internet Explorer 6.0. Could someone please give it a try and let me know if it works?

No, you have to uninstall 7 and it rolls back to 6 (wow tabbed broswing!!)
I'll get you some screen grabs of that character encoding problem and some more details a bit later.

Hi Percy
When there are many replies to a post it is easy for the poster to pick and chose what to repy to, thus many good arguments are left to waste. Maybe not allowing other posts to be seen till previous questions are answered?

That sounds less like 'avoiding dogpiles' and more like a strategy for maximising any feelings of oppression and resentment the dogpilee may already be suffering.

Um, why do we need a spellchecker? Isn't this a little hardcore?

I don't claim to have any handle on it, it seems to me that many a good post is ignored and the poster gets to pick and choose what to answer. Maybe there's no way to avoid it on an open discussion forum. We can always think of the lurkers. Thanks.

Is it possible to turn off the light blue light on closed topics?
Particularly the ones from Proposed Topic when they have been promoted? Also would it be possible for people's preferences to automatically turn off those lights from forums they pick as not being interested in? People? Finally what about a radio button choice to {show new} O {show all} O posts? Just thinking of ways to increase filtering. by our ability to understand RebelAAmerican.Zen[Deist

RAZD writes: Is it possible to turn off the light blue light on closed topics? There are two ways to turn off the blue light:
On the page listing all the forums, you can turn off the blue light for all the threads of a forum by clicking on the blue light next to that forum. And you can turn them all on the same way. The blue light only applies to threads whose most recent post is less than 48 hours old. Changes are coming (albeit slowly) that will make possible all kinds of various display and filtering options.

sorry, to clarify: is it possible for the software to turn the blue lights off for closed threads? why signal a new message that cannot be responded to?
in particular when a proposed thread is moved to a new location, there is no need to signal the new message as it is repeated in the new location (what about having the message link to the new one?) not a big quibble, just a thought.

RAZD asked if we can link a moved thread from the original thread to the moved version. Right now we simply link the forum. This is done by the software; the admins don't actually create these links. Percy, is it possible to at least add this to the feature list? This would need to be done both for- promoting a thread from PNT - moving a thread from one forum to the next. To RAZD: this is part of the software, it's not something the admins do. We just use the admin tools. Doing it manually would be a lot more work I think, so I'm posting this software "feature request." Thanks. Comments on moderation procedures (or wish to respond to admin messages)? - Go to:

Don't understand the request. When a thread is moved, a message is added with a links to the thread and forum to which it was moved.
There *is* a bug with moved threads which will be remedied when we move the messages to MySQL, and maybe this is what you're thinking of. Right now, old links to a thread don't follow that thread if it is moved. For example, if you link to a message of a thread in Biological Evolution and then the thread is moved to Human Origins, the link will point to a non-existent thread. This will be fixed by having a single table for all messages, with message number, thread number and forum numbers being mere data associated with the message.

Would it be possible to add a colum to the search tool results to display subtopics? This would help narrow down the process of going through a lot of results for those of us that use subtopics as focus statements

Percy,
Can you disable the BLINK and MARQUEE HTML tags? This message has been edited by Ben, Saturday, 2005/10/22 11:41 AM

What Flintstone browser are you using that recognizes the BLINK tag?
People who think they have all the answers usually don't understand the questions.
