I'd like to discuss Herepton's thread "Theistic Evolution".
Thanks, and also thanks for all the work you put into this forum.

Everybody is entitled to my opinion.

Primary problem with Showcase
I didn't chime in earlier, but I've just had a look at Ray's Theistic Evolution thread and it's bloody awful. He's tried to boot both posters who replied after their first replies and his posts are utter nonsense.
I know the argument is that the Showcase forum is unmoderated and that it's a padded cell for the unmoderatable, but many newcomers to the board have made the same mistake, namely that the "Showcase Forum" is a sort of elite place where really good debates take place. It's the name that does it.
Previously the name "Boot Camp" let people know what to expect when they went in there, especially lurkers and new members.
I know that you want to give the more "problematic" members a place where they can voice their opinions and can't scream censorship, but what's going on in Showcase really is beyond the pale.
I would suggest giving people a "heads up" when they enter showcase to read posts so that they don't think this represents the "creme de la creme" or change the name of the forum to something a bit more suitable. I could suggest some, but I'd probably be permanently banned.
The final suggestion I have is that posts in Showcase by Showcased members which would bring down the ire of Mods in any other forum have that noted by a Mod at the bottom of a post without any sanctions being imposed.
You might feel that these suggestions are unworkable and I appreciate that sometimes I have abberant ideas, especially when irritated. If so, forget I even spoke

Re: Primary problem with Showcase
Showcase and its predecessors have always been problematic, and I'd say all your comments are pretty much on the mark.
In a way, the problem of moderating a discussion forum is similar to maintaining civil order in society in general. For those who fall afoul of society's laws there is trial followed, if guilty, by incarceration with the possibility of rehabilitation. At this discussion board there is suspension, both temporary and permanent, which is analogous to incarceration, and then there is Showcase, which is sort of like incarceration and sort of not. Maybe it could be considered like one of those Federal minimum security country club prisons. But unlike prison it allows interaction with those on the outside. Maybe this isn't a good idea.
Society also endures a lot of unpleasant behavior without locking people up. In cities homeless people sleep in storeshop fronts, sidewalk preachers shout their pious wares, jaywalkers abound, etc. I think we put up with a fair amount here, too.
I don't know if there are answers, but I do know that we'll keep looking for them. If I ever finish my current project at work (it's taking up what used to be my spare time) I have some ideas for some automated improvements that would make Showcase superflous, but there's no guarantee they would work. If a discussion board somewhere solved this problem the idea would spread like wildfire and we'd know about it.

Yes, I put my prized collectibles in a showcase, not an air sickness bag.
How about:
Soapbox
Arena
or both: Soapbox Arena
Extreme Arena
Bedlamarama

Re: Primary problem with Showcase
I like soapbox: it's judgmentally neutral and it implies that it is the person's opinion.

Second Soapbox
I second that idea for a new name for the showcase forum.

Re: Second Soapbox
If it were my choice I'd prefer to see these "showcases" scrapped given the quality that Herepton and Randman have demonstrated within them most recently.
Soapbox IS a much better name for them, however.

Soapbox
Agreed. "Showcase" makes it sound as though the moderators are proud of the level of reasoning displayed on those threads.
