In response to your post in the GD thread that reopened it. I will certainly accept the challenge.

Pile on now?
Now that Faith isn't at the bottom of the pile can we pile on in the GD?
She left a gold mine of misstatements to correct.

Re: Pile on now?
I say "No".
I very much think we need a new "Great Debate" topic, with one or at most a specific few from the evo side.
Faith, input here please?

PaulK / Faith "Great Debate" happening in wrong place?
PaulK has posted his "Please Read. Faith's "Dinosaur" argument examined" message 205 at the "Is Evolutionist Disparagement of Creationism Justified?" topic.
This is a reply to Faiths message 189
This seems to be a fine discussion, BUT WHY IS IT HAPPENING THERE?
Faith, PaulK - "Great Debate" on that theme? You can include mining your previous messages for the new topic.

Re: PaulK / Faith "Great Debate" happening in wrong place?
I must say that there are several people on this list who are far better informed on geology than I am. I'll consider a Great Debate but only if it is focussed on areas where I regard my personal knowledge or readily available sources as adequate.
That reply pretty much hit my limits on this subject barring another good internet source (there WAS a good page on reconstructing the environment where the Morrison Formation was deposited from the geology, but I think it's gone now - at least its moved from where I found it and I couldn't find it when I tried google).

Sorry, I somehow missed this. I'll set it up now. I'll act as moderator for now, but would AdminAsgara be willing to take over? Queen? Please?

Faith in a GD?
Yes, Oh Fearless Leader?
I will moderate a GD if both sides are ok with that. Does Faith still want to participate?

Suggestion for Jazzns
When Faith talks about erosion leaving a flat surface, I wonder if she might be thinking about uneven rates of erosion due to different hardnesses of the material being eroded. For example, here's a photo from Monument Park in Arizona:
She might be wondering why the layers of the Grand Canyon have no buried structures like this that were first eroded into this uneven shape, then covered over again by deposition.

PS: Do you know how these come about?

Re: Suggestion for Jazzns
If you're asking me I have no clue LOL. I would hazard a guess of somekind of volcanic intrusion exposed much later in time.

Re: Suggestion for Jazzns
I did a quick search to see what I could find on the subject because it has always interested me as well. Basically, the terrain relies on a thick shaly unit overlain by sandstone and then another shale deposit. The tectonics are important as well. Apparently, a broad uplift called the Monument Uplift arched the rocks here inducing fracture patterns in the section. The impression I get is that the upper shale actually protected the sand from water percolation into the fractures, but once it started, erosion was rapid. You can imagine the sandstone sloughing off the sides of a canyon and down ths slopes formed by the underlying shale. The process formed mesas and buttes at first and then the spires that we see remaining.

Here is another form of the same feature in Precambrian rocks. In this location a broad uplift called the Roraima Plateau or the Grand Sabana in Venezuela is eroded into leaving giant tepuis that inspired "The Lost World". THis is, of course where Angle Falls is located. I'm wondering if some of the planation at Monument Valley might have been caused by similar rivers. It's really quite a unique and exciting trip.

Memo to Faith
I remind you, that our attempts at setting up 1 or more "Great Debates" are intended to be an aid for you to present your position, without the danger of getting buried under replies.
If you are not interested in pursuing the Deposition and Erosion of Sediments topic, just post a message there saying such.
If you are interested, Jazzns has posted a new message, for you to reply to.
Or you may be interested in a different "Great Debate" theme. If so, you can post an opening message to the Proposed New Topics forum, which should include the request that it be a "GD". You might then also wish to propose an opponent.
To the others, I don't think this here topic should be a side topic to the "Great Debate" topic. Possibly, I should close it down, but I won't.

Re: Suggestion for Jazzns
Hi, Edge, care to clear up a question for me? I want to know the difference betwixt a mesa and a butte. Most geo sites I consulted seemed to regard the two as alternatives. One explanation that I read said you could graze a cow on a mesa whereas you can feed a herd of cows on a butte. Is that close?

Re: Memo to Faith
Usually there's a peanut gallery thread for each GD thread. Isn't this it? If so, it should probably be moved to the [forum=-14] forum. Or a new peanut gallery thread could be opened there.

Re: Memo to Faith
In the previous "GD", between Jar and Buz, the "Peanut Gallery" topic was specifically surpressed, until after the "GD" topic was done. Then the new "PG" topic kicked in.
I very much think that procedure is a good thing. The is no real way to isolate the "GD" from the "PG". I think a concurrent "PG" would in effect be part of the "GD"

Unfortunately the picture isn't available to me, either because my computer isn't powerful enough or because the website shut it down, which could be the case as when I click on "enlarge" it says it's unavailable.
