Deism in the 18th century
At any rate, I think we can say that in the 18th century, Enlightenment ideas took hold among the educated elite in the colonies. That was very fortunate.
The masses of people remained Calvinists or Quakers or some derivative thereof. There were massive conservative revivals, such as The Great Awakening.
Deism was never "popular," except among the leaders.
