Most likely an organised version started around the time of the first town and cities (say 5000 BCE +/- 1000yrs) when people started to identify with their town/ city.
Before that you would have had skirmishes between tribes. When the people living in the cities began to create surplus of resources the wandering people may have been motivated to take these resources by infiltration, robbery and murder; rather than brute force. If this takes a week or two of coverte action, bam! You have your first terrorist.

How do "freedom fighters" start? When? Where? The two phenomena are pretty much the same, just depending on whether you support or oppose their cause, so if you can answer one of these questions, you have pretty much answered the other.

One good example is Judges 15:3-5
3And Samson said concerning them, Now shall I be more blameless than the Philistines, though I do them a displeasure. 4And Samson went and caught three hundred foxes, and took firebrands, and turned tail to tail, and put a firebrand in the midst between two tails. 5And when he had set the brands on fire, he let them go into the standing corn of the Philistines, and burnt up both the shocks, and also the standing corn, with the vineyards and olives. People have always terrorized each other.
The term "terrorism" used to refer to warfare where terrorizing the enemy was the primary goal - as opposed to killing them or stealing their stuff. It's only recently that "terrorism" refers to what they do and "fighting for freedom" refers to what we do. Is a suicide bomber really more terrifying than a squadron of B-52s? Howdy, Ringo.
Actually, the original use of terrorism was in regards to the use of fear and intimidation as deliberate policy by the state (ironically, by the terroristes of the French Revolution themselves). A usage, by the way, that I much prefer. Acts of violence committed by groups that view themselves as victimized by some notable historical wrong. Although these groups have no formal connection with governments, they usually have the financial and moral backing of sympathetic governments. Typically, they stage unexpected attacks on civilian targets, including embassies and airliners, with the aim of sowing fear and confusion. Israel has been a frequent target of terrorism, but the United States has increasingly become its main target American Psychological Association (APA):terrorism. (n.d.). The American Heritage® New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy, Third Edition. Retrieved January 29, 2007, from Dictionary.com website: Terrorism= Definition & Meaning | Dictionary.com In the modern sense, it is a group of people who can't defeat X government(s) militarily, so they target civilians until that government bends to their will. And its been going on in some form or another for thousands of years, but explosives have made it much easier for these people to inflict mass casualties on the local populace. Modern Islamic terrorism origins go back to Wahhabism, named after the revivalist movement founded by Muhammad Ibn'Abd al-Wahhab in 1744. Wahhab called for a return to a pure and unadulterated form of Islam closer to the ideals of the Prophet. Personally, I'm not going to piss off any man that can kill 1,000 people with a donkey jaw bone, nomatter his ethnicity. If the OP's original question was more along the lines of "Why do young arab men blow themselves up?", then we get can into that also. Hard pressed on my right. My center is yielding. "Why do young arab men blow themselves up?" The reasons are not very much different from why young American men risk their lives for freedom - but that's probably a different thread. Help scientific research in your spare time. No cost. No obligation. Join the World Community Grid with Team EvC

The reasons are not very much different from why young American men risk their lives for freedom - but that's probably a different thread. Motivations for our all volunteer force vary wildly, but I imagine none of them are because the individual wants 72 virgins right after they drive a vehicle full of explosives into a crowd of women and children. What, are you shitting me? You're absolutely certain that no American male ever joined the military because he thought it would be a great way to impress women and get laid?

Just got an email that explains why US soldiers volunteer.
Dear Friend, I am a Captain of the US Marine Corps on Monitoring and Peace -keeping mission in Baghdad-Iraq. The reason why I’m explaining my finding to you is to seek for your assistance to enable you contributes immensely to the actualization of my dreams. On the 27th day of January 2007, we were alerted on the presence of some terrorist’s hideouts in Haifa Street, a long thoroughfare of high-rise buildings built by Saddam Hussein here in Baghdad. After Immediate intervention by the Iraqi forces and ours, we were able to capture many foreign Arab fighters linked to al Qaeda in that operation and over 100 militants were killed on the process. Among the Arab fighters linked to al Qaeda two were interrogated by two of our intelligent investigators and I. They confessed that some of them are fighters for al Qaeda and some are for Ayman al-Zawahiri and they took us to some of their hideout which runs along the west bank of the Tigris River that cuts through the capital. When we invaded into the hideout, we recovered several guns, amour including some boxes among which two contains bullets, one filled with hard drugs (heroine) and the other two to my amazement contain some US Dollars which we assumed amounted to $10.2M after I and two of the intelligent investigators counted them and it took us over 2 hours to get it counted. I however instructed them to keep this in high secrecy so that we can have the money to our selves, they all agreed to the plan and they replied to me on how I can get this huge sum out of this country and I told them that it’s no problem. This motivated me to connive with my best friend in our force who went with me and the two other officers to keep the boxes in a safer place. I am now in keen need of a “Reliable and Trustworthy” person like you who would receive, secure and protect these boxes containing the US Dollars for me up on till my assignment elapses here. I assure and promise to give you 20% of this fund, however feel free to negotiate what you wish to have as your percentage in this deal. Please assure me of your keeping this topmost secret to protect my job with the US Monitoring and Peace-Keeping mission. My Sincere regards, Capt. Brian James Please keep this secret to protect our troops. Aslan is not a Tame Lion
