Re: The defining post of this thread ...
Your decisions are not anymore intelligent than what has been taught to you.

and therein lies the basic difference between the two bodies of posters here at EvC. I think he really beluieves that statement, as do many others here at EvC. They believe they are the sum of what they have been taught.
There are two groups of thinkers in this world, those who look for answers to questions, and those who look for the questions to answers.
riVeRraT, many folk are not the sum of what they are taught, infact some are even known to question what they are taught.
Excellent observation and analysis, jar, thanks.
I think, for me, I am the sum of what I have learned, not just what I was taught.
An awful lot of my learning has happened on my own, inside my own head, as a result of life experience or introspection and reflection.
Goodness, an awful lot of what my parents taught me I have had to UNlearn because it was so small-minded, hateful, or just plain wrong.

Goodness, an awful lot of what my parents taught me I have had to UNlearn because it was so small-minded, hateful, or just plain wrong.
i remember one day in high school when my grandmother said something about a "chinky chinky chinaman". i was amused because it was so ridiculous. my mother was appalled. i'm sure if i ever have children, when my mom says something negative about gays i will be appalled (as usual) and my children will blow it off as the ravings of senility.
i have spent most of my young life unlearning the crap that most people have taught to me whether in school or at church or wherever.
i am the sum of nothing. i lack the ability to take in most social information and have pretty much held my own opinions my whole life. if i know something, it's generally because i read it on my own.

Re: The defining post of this thread ...
Your right, I didn't mean it was exclusive.
It is however a big part of the sum.
If you choose to explore other venues than what you've been taugh, then your just teaching yourself new things, adding to the total sum.
There's no need to sidetrack that thought.
*edit*
I also wanted to say, that at no point doed this exclude me from any responsibility. It was everyone else who thought I was trying not to be responsible for my actions. I am fully responsible for what I did, but that doesn't change the way it happened, or that now from experience, I think it is wrong.

Same difference, you taught yourself.
I also said the sum of your surroundings. In other words your intelligence doesn't reach any further than what you have come in contact with, and how you interpret it.
You yourself said by nature we are not logical. I disagree, I say we are, but that we have trouble interpreting things.

WEll, that's the biggest bunch of Bull Shit I ever heard.
I guess you are god then, or super woman.
Everything in your life has made you do what you think your doing on your own. Unlearning is not a bad thing, but it is the sum of what you went through that forced you to unlearn everything. If you were content, then you wouldn't have to do that.
You are not reading anything on your own, someone had to put it in print first.

just because someone wrote it down doesn't mean it must be indoctrinating. your brain works funny.
