Re: Colin Powell
Colin Powell spent 35 years in the military, rising from ROTC in college to become a four-star general and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during the 1991 Gulf War. He has worked in the administrations of six presidents including serving as secretary of state from 2001 to 2005

Colin Powell called out McCain for not challenging the anti Arab sentiments of suppo
I remember my disgust when John McCain was at a campaign event in the last month of the 2008 Presidential campaign.

An old white lady said that she heard that Obama was "an Arab", and she said it with fear and trepidation.

John McCain then took her microphone, and gave perhaps the most disgraceful response in Presidential campaign history.

He defended Obama, against the "Arab" accusation, by saying, "No ma'am, he is a good, decent American that I happen to disagree with".

Wow!

I watched all the networks and only Wolf Blitzer seemed to notice what a totally ****** response we all had to come to grips with.

(Blitzer was interviewing commentators, who brought up NOTHING of what McCain's response really was, then Blitzer quietly said, "There is also nothing wrong with being an Arab")

But then came General Colin Powell, on a late endorsement of Obama, on Meet The Press.

Gen. Powell expressed strong disgust with McCain's defense of Obama. He did not dare call it ******, but he had the distinction of being the only politician who would express disapproval at McCain over the incident.

(I am not happy that his MTP comments were an anomaly - among commentators - with regards to McCain's campaign event response to "I heard he's an Arab"; frankly it was and is sad that his dismay was indeed anomalous)

You're often incomprehensible, so I hope I've misunderstood you, but you seem to be endorsing racism, and Phat has seconded.

You're often incomprehensible,

I agree with that part. I'm not sure of the rest.

As best I can tell, LamarkNewAge is accusing McCain of anti-Arab racism. This was not how I understood McCain's statement.

Responding to you and NosyNed, this is the portion I must be misinterpreting:

LamarkNewAge writes:

An old white lady said that she heard that Obama was "an Arab", and she said it with fear and trepidation.

John McCain then took her microphone, and gave perhaps the most disgraceful response in Presidential campaign history.

He defended Obama, against the "Arab" accusation, by saying, "No ma'am, he is a good, decent American that I happen to disagree with".

LNA isn't deeming McCain's defense of Obama disgraceful and racist?

Yes, he is doing that. But he is missing the context.

McCain's wording may have been unfortunate (as quoted here, anyway). It may sound to some like he was saying Obama is a good American and Arabs are not. But clearly his intention was to defend Obama, not to offend Arabs.

Gayle Quinnell was the "******" supporter of McCain.
I just did a google search and things got interesting, and quite disturbing.

It seems that the ****** mindset, in our country, has seen the 2008 cry of Colin Powell get drowned out.

And from complementary media commentary, on the October 2008 Minnesota campaign event, IN 2018!

Yes, 2018!

It seems that McCain still is seen as standing up against his ****** supporter.

McCain knew the context was 100% about whether Obama was ethic Arab, which the 75 year old Quinnell felt was a very bad thing. (The Arab accusation predated the Birther birth) (As if it is a bad thing to be ethnic Arab).

I just read a full quote of McCains response. He started by saying "No ma'am. He is a good, decent family man" and it ended with "he's not [an Arab]".

A genuine juxtaposition from a man hell bent on his "bombs, bombs, bombs away" policy in the Middle East. The goal of successful political marketing of such a policy requires one to have an electorate which see Arabs, generally, as quite bad people who are sympathetic to terrorists.

How ****** McCain truely is, is something that only a mind reader could know. He said something ******. I dont know what his internal reasoning is. He might simply have not bothered to temper his raw juxtaposition, due to the fact that Arabs are thg he least popular ethnic group in the American white imagination. And it was almost a horrifically mad ****** mindset 13 years ago, in 2008.

Re: Colin Powell called out McCain for not challenging the anti Arab sentiments of suppo
He defended Obama by throwing ethnic Arabs under the bus. Aside from the small number of refugees, you see very little allowance for Middle Eastern immigration to the United States.

Obama, in 2015 (?) called the nation "disgraceful", for not wanting Syrian Muslim refugees to reside in the United States (polls
showed 63% American public opposition). Loudly.

Colin Powell really saw the damage McCain was inflicting (present and future) for not responding to ****** supporters with "the correct answer".

Powell was loud, stern, and decisive in his denunciation of McCain's response to, then 75 year old, Gayle Quinnell.

Watch the Meet The Press 2008 Colin Powell endorcement of Barak Obama.

    Stephen Sondheim, 91
    from Wikipedia:

Stephen Joshua Sondheim (/ˈsɒndhaɪm/ SOND-hym; March 22, 1930 – November 26, 2021) was an American composer and lyricist. One of the most important figures in 20th-century musical theater, Sondheim was praised for having "reinvented the American musical"[1] with shows that tackled "unexpected themes that range far beyond the [genre's] traditional subjects"[2] with "music and lyrics of unprecedented complexity and sophistication."[3] His shows addressed "darker, more harrowing elements of the human experience,"[4] with songs often tinged with "ambivalence"[5] about various aspects of life.

Sondheim's accolades include nine Tony Awards (including a Lifetime Achievement Tony in 2008),[6] an Academy Award, eight Grammy Awards, a Pulitzer Prize, a Laurence Olivier Award, and a 2015 Presidential Medal of Freedom. He also had a theatre named for him on Broadway and in the West End of London.

    Bob Dole, 98
I was never a fan. I think it may have been Hunter S. Thompson who coined the phrase "the spectre of Bob Dole in the Presidential race" as if he was a rising dead man walking.

sorry, someone else will have to cite his accomplishments, other than his WWII service record.
