Re: Effectiveness of method
Fair enough
I was afraid it was the usual quasi argument about if you have sex your not abstinent so by definition abstinence gives 100% protection.
That would be the same as discounting cases when the rubber broke due to mishandling, or when the effect of the pill was counteracted by other medicine etc when evaluating the protection offered by these contraception methods.
Combinations are the most effective, so teach the children, abstinence - condoms - hormonal birth control etc is the way to go.

Not really. Masturbation, including mutual masturbation is as safe as abstinence.
Thus only if you feel that spiritual health as defined by sex hating religions is a reality and important, then abstinence first.
Otherwise the question of what to do with your sexual feelings... and the only partners which are available are of unknown health (as well as yourself)... is: masturbation-mutual masturbation-protected sex (condom with additional contraceptive for heterovaginal intercourse).
And if unprotected sex greater than masturbation is desired, then it is best to stick with oral sex, without having a guy cum in one's mouth, and avoid a girl's menstrual blood.
Abstinence provides no additional physical protection.

An interesting article
This piece discusses a study on abstinence pledges:
http://slate.msn.com/id/2122093/
It turns out that abstinence pledges may (possibly) delay the start of sexual activity and reduce promiscuity - but they appear to have no statistically significant affect on STDs.

Sorry for the really late reply.

Sure it does. It "worked" for me.
So, does it mean that if you like pizza everyone else must like pizza too?
You have no idea how many times I have seen people who took the vow of abstinence until marriage end up having sex everyday with different people each night.
I'll tell you this much, speaking as an atheist I also believe in abstinence. Unfortunately, most people in the world are hippocrits... surprise surprise they're also religious. Abstinence-plus, I think, is the most practical way to approach this problem, not abstinence-only.
By the way, you know what abstinence-plus is?

Snow, my point was not that it was popular or worked all the time, but to counter your statment "abstinence doesn't work at all."
I fully realize not everyone likes pizza. Hipocracy also wasn't in my statement, I know it exists.

I helped scare an old person-I stopped someone from keeping more of their money-So what if people want to have say in the places they live and the cars that they drive-I gave money to an environmental group that helped keep us dependant on foreign oil-I help the enemies of democracy get stronger by telling them laws don’t matter-What if one day I need an abortion-Sex with an intern, everybody does it-I help teach kids around America that America is always wrong
Do you know what your DNC stands for?
