I don't know about any one else here, but your jaded and cynical Queen had a sting of tears in her eyes watching the opening ceremonies in Athens. That the Greek people, no matter what their views on our country's international policies, gave us and everyone else such a warm welcome was truly inspiring. Hopefully the next two weeks go smoothly and everyone leaves with pride in their hearts.
I thought I'd open this thread for others to discuss the games. Lets keep it good natured.

I was particularly impressed with the opening ceremony (except for stupid commentary by Bob Costas and Katie Couric, in the US anyway), particular from a technical standpoint; the acheivement in stagecraft they accomplished was fitting for the birthplace of theatre.

I want the U.S. basketball team to lose.
Make that, I want all the professional athletes to lose.

Wow, I know what you mean. Letting professional atheletes compete in an international amateur event is ridiculous.

minnemooseus,
I am curious about your attitude on this issue. Why shouldn't the Olympic games include the very best athletes from each country? What difference does what they do for a living make?
Most countries have been sending their professional athletes to the games for decades and it is a more recent thing for the U.S. In the past, we were sending our kids to play against their men. The U.S.'s joining in the fray simply leveled the playing field.
To insist on totally amateur Olympic participants in the games would be unenforceable on a gigantic scale.
I like the idea of a level playing field though.

Remember the "Miracle on Ice"? That meant something.
Seemingly the worst is Olympic tennis. The same pros playing each other, as what you can see at every professional tennis event. What the hell is the point of having tennis in the Olympics?

A little Olympic fun
Four years ago I was a wee boy and didn't care about the olympics. Now at my current level or maturity, I still didn't see the opening ceremony because I wasn't terribly interested.
HOWEVER! The following events I DO want to see:
1.Boxing
2.Wrestling
3.Tae Kwon Do
4.Judo
I don't know if all of them will be shown, or even if all of these are summer olypics. If you guys could help me out on that I'd appriciate it. GO USA!

U.S. basketball team
Wouldn't it have been a great gesture, for the U.S. to declined to send a basketball team, or to send an amateur team?
Otherwise what is shown? That the the U.S. can prove that they can put together the best professional basketball team, of all the nations.
I'd rather watch an amateur U.S. team loose, that watch a professional team win.

{Edited to correct spelling of "amatur". If it's still wrong, it's Asgaras fault, for I used her spelling.}

Yes dear, amateur is correct...but don't blame me if you follow my spelling example when it isn't right. You follow my example you deserve what ever ridicule you might get.

The sports that interest me in the olympics are soccer and basketball. In soccer Iraq (Who the hell are they?) stunned Portugal(the team that made the euro 2004 final) 4-2. In basketball I want to see my country go past at least to the second round. The basketball tournament is going to be very good. I only hope USA doesnt win gold. Go kick some booty Puerto Rico (our first game is against the USA ouch!)

Re: U.S. basketball team
I think its fine to send proffesional athletes to compete in basketball, since most of the other nations have been doing it for decades. Most of europe now has a competant basketball leauge, and most of them do compete for their home teams. It seems strange to want to restrict the US but no one else. I would rather watch the best compete than just send someone to show up and lose "gracefully".

I agree that the Miracle on Ice was something very special. Our kids defeating the Russian professionals was a stunning victory.
Our basketball pros versus all the other basketball pros is a level field. And at least they don't play each other regularly so it is fresh. And U. S. success is far from a given in basketball this Olympics. There are some very good teams competing. I agree that Olympic tennis is about the same as the pro circuits and so, is not special.
I could get behind a totally amateur Olympic Games if it was somehow enforceable.

I just heard the news that U.S. athletes were warned not to wave the U.S. flag excessively. Apparently, they (the Greek security) thought that Americans are too unpopular these days.

Professional athletes have always been part of the modern day Olympics. What do you think state sponsored athletes are? Athletes that are paid to be athletes. It just so happens that US professional athletes tend to be paid a little more than other professional athletes. Many times, athletes that win gold medals are awarded large cash rewards by their governments, such as the 100,000 dollar reward that a Ukranian femal swimmer earned today.
