Ghoti
To illustrate the intricacies of English spelling and pronunciation, I devised the following riddle. Can anyone rationalize the pronunciation of the last word?
An English herring once was heard
to say it wished to be a bird.
But it would never get its wish,
since it was caught when still a ghoti.

Re: Ghoti
I'm trying to remember who first use "ghoti". Perhaps it was G.B. Shaw.
You might appreciate this comment from a 2000 usenet post by linguist Jacques Guy:
The ultimate secret of language is this: language is absurd, illogical. If it were not, it would not work.

Re: Ghoti
i have a book by dr seuss that nobody's ever heard of. it's called the "tough coughs as he ploughs the dough." the peculiarity of the title is only really apparent when written: -ough is written four times, but pronounced four different ways.
there was some anecdote in it about ted in his younger years having problems with the phrase in school, and why it shouldn't be read "the tuff cuffs as he pluffs the duff" or perhaps "the toff coffs as he ploffs the doff" or ... well you get the idea.

Re: Ghoti
That was Oliver Wendell Holmes, according to my father:
"gh" as in cough
"o" as in women
"ti" as in nation
And Voltaire supposedly said he wished that the plague would take half of the English, and ague the other half.

words as clothing
But when people try to associate your spelling ability with the validity of your message, then it is not wanting the best, but outright invalid criticism.
I would guess that there is a rather high correlation between good language skills and education, intelligence, and general knowledge. Right or wrong, I pay more attention to someone who can write well (with good spelling and grammar, and proper use of the damn shift key) even if I don't agree with them. In a similar manner, I tend to judge people in public by the clothes that they wear, and how they wear them. In this place, your words are your clothing.
So, what to do? Either take the time to compose your message with care to help ensure that it is taken seriously, or rebel and take the chance that it won't isn't.
Cheers.
grammatical error corrected--*heh*

Re: words as clothing
That's how I feel as well.
A reasonable mastery of the basic grammar and vocabulary of one's own native tongue is required to communicate in an effective way.
Making many, many grammar and spelling errors indicates to me that,
1) you didn't or couldn't learn the rules of English in grade school, which may mean that you aren't very bright or don't work very hard at learning things,
which would seem to indicate...
2) you're too lazy to use the nearly instantaneous spelling and grammar checks that your computer provides.
IOW, you just sound kind of lazy and dumb.

Re: Google has a spellchecker
Firefox can also have the Aspell extension
Or for those mac users out there, Safari has built-in spell checking. Just go to Edit>Spelling>Check Spelling as You Type.

english usages
... the intricacies of English spelling and pronunciation ...
... and then there are the common usages problems. The one I like is on the difficulties of comprehension of english as a second language when you run into something like:

Re: Wanting the best
There is no excuse, what-so-ever, for spelling errors in your post. Get the Google tool bar, or one of the other free spell checker plug-ins for your favourite browser and use them before you post. To do otherwise is laziness, and laziness is a valid reason for ignoring the content of your post.
Ultimately, message board's are a means of communication; if you can't be bothered to try and communicate with me as clearly as possible I don't see why I should try and deal with your arguments as well as I can.
And just, FYI, I'm Dyslexic. I have good reasons for not being able to spell well, yet I can manage to post without spelling errors nearly all the time - if I can do it, you sure as hell can.

I type things correctly and still people don't understand.
There is no excuse, what-so-ever, for spelling errors in your post.
I say there is no excuse to say someone doesn't know what they are talking about if a word comes out misspelled.
Further more, those who point out these misspellings, I have always caught them misspelling themselves.
what-so-ever
What so ever.
favourite
favorite.
I guess you aren't using that tool bar eh?
Does everyone see what I am talking about now?
I guess I now have authority to ignore what you said, because heh! You just misspelled a word, and phrased something badly.
lmao
