Why would I want a Second Life that's just an extension of my First Life?
Yeah, that's the way I see much of it. As the personal trainer put it, probably the only people interested in avatar sex are those not getting any real sex. It's really bad and ridiculous. One woman I met had never been to a sex club and wanted to see, so I took her to one. There was a guy, a newbie I presume, buying sex for 500 Lindens (about $2). I said to my friend, "Geez, not even if it were free...", and she agreed. There's nothing sexy about it at all.
But it isn't just sex that attracts people - the sex is just a small though visible component. Gambling clubs seem far more popular. They often have a bar, but why anyone would buy their avatar a drink or a smoke is beyond me.
But apparently people also actually live plain old normal lives in 2nd life, and I have no idea why. The real estate agent for that village I mentioned said people live there, and when I asked why, she said she provides privacy and protection from interference. I still don't get it, and I've got enough keeping me busy in my real life, I have no interest in a second.
But the discussion possibility seems intriguing to me.
I'm interested in the concept, but my Flintstone computer doesn't even come close to the system requirements.
Probably needs a fast connection, too. Well, start planning for an upgrade - the requirements get higher every year.

Rough as in primitive? Or rough as in you dropped into the middle of a gunfight?
I offered you friendship, accept it next time you're on and I'll teleport you to a building area.

Yes, it seemed to totally fritz my graphics card temporarily.
I'm a bit dubious of it now, I don't want to overstress my system.

Ah, come on, where's your sense of adventure? Besides, do you really think personal trainers, beauticians and high school girls have better hardware than you?
I've had SL die a couple times, but it's rare for me. However, if you look at their problem log there do seem to be a few problems.

haven't checked it out, and don't plan too. however, it seems that NOAA has created a place on 2nd Life, where you can actually experience hurricanes and tsunamis, should you want to.

Probably crashed your graphics drivers. A quick restart usually solves the problem, but make sure you have the most up-to-date graphics drivers available for your chipset. Unless you have some weirdo card, you'll get those drivers from either ati.com or nvidia.com.

Percy,
How are you coming along in Second Life? What's your name there? Where do you hang out?

I haven't visited in a while. There was no interest here. WoundedKing looked around a bit, but I guess he wasn't impressed. I thought it might be great as a chatroom with visuals if we built a clubhouse on our own land with restricted access. My name is Percy Planer.

Re: More Adventures in Second Life
As a chat room it would do fine perhaps, but I don't think Second Life lends itself for the type of discussions we are used to having here, with all the long arguments that come with it. Also, if an EvC-place in Second Life would draw as many people as this forum does, you can say goodbye to the performance.
But it would be nice to have a different experience with some people we already "know" from somewhere. I am going there now for a stroll.

Savage Love in Second Life
Heh. I thought of Percy's adventures in Second Life when I read this.
Last week, Dan Savage (the sex advice columnist for Savage Love) got a letter from a male who has a female avatar in order to have "lesbian sex", but is complaining that his wife considers this to be adultery.
There is a follow up column where readers get to comment on Savage's advice.

Actually, if their god makes better pancakes, I'm totally switching sides. -- Charley the Australopithecine

someone stole my idea?
heh.
I've considered a short story (sci fi) regarding a virtual reality suit and created avatars. The suit feeds back sensations to the wearer to make the virtual world seem as real as ... what we regard as reality ...
And the issue of cross-gender personas. Or people who would be intentionally fat or balding (though this touches on an existing story).

There are only like thousands of those stories around, ever since Teledildonics became a possibility.
But, the suit couldn't give full realism, as it wouldn't give all possible sensations. Personally, I'd opt for direct neural stimulation, but I'm probably biased.
