America spends an absurd amount on it's military; you could halve your military spending and still have the highest military spending of any country on earth. Hell, you'd then be spending only as much as the next FIVE highest spenders combined - at least two of whom would almost certainly be backing you in any conflict. Compared to countries that might, conceivably, get involved in a war with you it's even more over-sized - Iran and North Korea, for example, spend less than an eightieth of what you spend.
See here for numbers (scroll down a bit) Your military is bloated, over-funded, unnecessary and ill-suited to the tasks that it actually faces. You're still (much like us, in fact) funding a military set up to fight the cold war in a world where that war is never going to happen. And now you're wasting even more money on a missile-defence program that simply will not work (see the November issue of Scientific American for a discussion of why).

Execpt for the war in Iraq, Bush is actually spending less than Clinton ever did What about the war in Iraq do you feel merits its "exception" from fiscal policy?

What about a possible alien invasion?
Anyway, I once heard that the US spends more money on the military than China, Russia, and much of Europe combined. Hate world. Revenge soon!

Yes, much of our military is stuff to be used in the cold war, and we could probaly use some cuts on things like Abrams, JSF, the minuteman missle, and a few other things. We are slowly, very slowly, getting away from this (see styker armored vecicle) but you have to remember now, we needed most, not all, but most of this stuff untill operation Iraqi freedom and Afganistan. For example, in the first Iraq war, before we whooped their but, Iraq did have MIG-25s (just a few) Floggers, Mirrage F1 (french made, what a suprise!) and other fighters, (They did manage one air-air kill against us, but that was against a squid) and tanks, though old soviet, were still tanks. We needed Patriot PAC-2 to protect us from scuds, and other stuff. Now however, the situation has changed, and your right, we need to change faster to stay with it.

{Shortened display form of URL, to restore page width to normal (I use a 800x600 resolution). - Adminnemooseus} I don't know how reliable this site is but I have heard the same numbers from a number of sources. The US is responsible for very nearly half of the world's military spending. As much as all the rest combined! Is this perhaps too much? I really think this merits a topic of its own. But I'm not going to be the one to start it.

Yes, it is too much, but like my previous post, why is costing so much? Though we need more military than we have, we shouldn't be paying as much as we are for it. Usefull strategic bases close down while useless bases in a congressmans pet district stay open and continue to waste money. Mainly, we have to pay people to work putting parts on airplanes more than they do in russia. There is also the corrupt businesses (like the boeing scandle) that prevent us from getting things (like tankers) that we really need, and then we have to waste a bunch of money on an investigation.

Because the "other side" had a homocidal/racist/bigot/delusional ego-maniac/madman as their leader.

I really was hoping you'd have some answers other than simply repeating the question. IMHO it's important because it will eventually resolve to the question of budget, funding and policy regarding National Defense. I'm not going to give my answer right now. Hopefully you'll work on the question. I can say that Lam's answer has nothing to do with the question. So again, why do YOU think the allies won WWII? Aslan is not a Tame Lion

They helped but afterall there were equally good code breakers on the other sides as well.
Let's see what JF comes up with and we'll go from there. Aslan is not a Tame Lion
