When I first came to EvC, it took a while for me to learn the acronyms or shorthand used by members. I still run into a few now and then.
I'd like to compile a list of the shorthand terms we use.
What I have used:
ABE - Added By Edit
BTW - By The Way
EOT - End Of Thread
EvC - Evolution vs Creation
IMHO - In My Humble Opinion
IMO - In My Opinion
IOW - In Other Words
I know there are more out there, enlighten me.

WCEJWPE: Why Can't Everybody Just Write Plain English?
I think the art of writing is quickly becoming something of the past with all that ridiculous shorthand stuff. Personally, I'd much rather read a well written post that is made up of grammatically complete sentences, well punctuated, and spelled correctly.
I don't mind the occasional use of acronyms like YEC, TOE, and such, but to foreshorten whole phrases like "as far as I am concerned" to something that sounds like a kicked dog is pure laziness, as far as I'm concerned. If we can't keep our thoughts tidy, as is demonstrated time and again on this site, then let's at least keep our language clean. Or is that asking too much?

Do you think that came about more after the text messaging or more by people who don't really type?

I think it maybe be a derivative of OMGWTFBBQ, who was an administrator of another forum I read. They have a sort of encyclopedia of their inside jokes and whatnot, and OMGWTFBBQ wrote there explaining where his name came from:
quote:
Way back when, I used to work for a few online Mac Gaming websites. Inside Mac Games, Mac Gamer's Ledge, MacGamer, etc. During that time, I was often to be found on GameRanger, a Mac equivalent to Gamespy Arcade (it's actually better if you ask me). Anyhow, there was another Mac gaming website run by a few Mac gamers with a sense of humor, Utterer.com, which was headed by none other than Frank "Utterer" Caratozzolo. Frank was also always on GameRanger, and we always chatted.
One day, a person logged into GameRanger that was just a bit too AOLish for our tastes. As in, every time the guy said anything in chat, it had a "OMG" or a "LOL" or a "ROFLMAO" attached to it. Of course this gets annoying rather quickly, and Frank was tired of this guy's moronic BS. So what does any rational, sane person do? He floods the channel with as many acronyms as he can. Frank Started off with "OMG WTF BBQ DSL TNT BBC CNN CBS PCP RNR PBS NBA NFL..." and everyone else followed suit. The whole channel just spouted off every three letter acronym they could think of. The idiot got the hint and logged off.
And that's where OMGWTFBBQ comes from. True, utterly boring, story.

Is it such a problem? as long as the message is transmitted?
(then again.. I'm an engineer... if we didn't have acronyms my life would be hell!)

This very topic is proof that the message is NOT always transmitted.

I don't know, Dawn. It could be text messaging. Then again, with T9, typing a text message has become a lot easier.
I don't think being a non-typer is a factor. The people who use shorthand the most are some of the more prolific posters, it seems. Being able to write so much in such a short time, they'd have to be proficient typers. But that may be my skewed view of the situation.
By the way, here is an example of what I mean. One may not always agree with Faith - or perhaps never - and her beliefs are of course poppycock in the eyes of some, but BY GOD, SHE CAN WRITE! In that post, she managed to avoid all but two acronyms, and the two she did use are so frequent on this site that we may overlook such a small error.
{added by edit}
Of course there are more good writers among us, but I was rather amused by what Faith wrote there, and I wanted to do something with it. I don't subscribe to the view she expressed there, but I respect it. And I admire her use of language.

Re: Here's another one...
It existed before text messaging in the halls of nerdium. As did the other "shorthand" forms etc.
