Author | Topic: A Case for a creator | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

This book is by Lee Strobell. It interviews various experts as a journalist trys to disprove Creationism. Very good and enjoyable read and very accurate. Let me know what you think.
Here is a link to it on amazon. Let me change something real quick. I belive it was a case for faith that he was an atheist when he investigated it. In a case for a creator, he acts from the atheist point of view in trying to shoot holes in theists theorys. Mabey he should have had some athiests interviews in there, but he did an ok job of trying to shoot down there arguments himself. The chapter I really liked was the symbols of evoloution. It really debunked alot of the lies that are being forced upon us at public schools. Again, tell me what you think. This message has been edited by JESUS freak, 02-09-2005 09:24 AM

If you wish to actually discuss the contents of this book you should propose a new topic.
I guess it would go in faith and belief when you have done it. You might want to add a link to amason or something for those interested in the book. I could have sworn it has been discussed here but a google didn't find anything (yet anyway). If it hasn't been it would be a good topic to propose. You would have to summarize some of the main points and give your views on them. ABEI was remembering wrong. It appears to have been mentioned a number of times but it would be a good topic for a thread of its own. This message has been edited by AdminNosy, 02-08-2005 13:55 AM

AdminNosy writes: If you wish to actually discuss the contents of this book you should propose a new topic. I must disagree with this statement. If it is a book, discussion of its contents can (and should?) be in the "Book Nook" forum. Amazon.com etc. links would be nice. Adminnemooseus

If you wish, however, we divide the discussion up into a number of fora for tidiness and ease of browsing by new comers.
Since everything we discuss is in a book somewhere what stops everything from piling up here? But ok, yea, this one is pretty focussed I guess. I'll agree with you on this.

Hi Jesusfreak - could you tell us a little more about the content - what arguments does he explore?
If I remember right - this guy is a preacher, no?

Lee Strobel was a reporter from Chicago who wrote a number of books "supposedly" using his investigative expertise to try and disprove Christianity. Supposedly his investigations did the opposite and he became a Christian.
In reality if he used the same investigative journalism in his work as he did in him books, he would have been fired long ago. He conveniently only interviewed one side of the issue and did not follow up on ANY issues brought up by his informants. He accepted anything and everything said. My understanding of Strobel' method is that he picks "experts" who largely agree with the view he wants to put forward and then tosses them easy questions.
So which experts did he interview in this book ? And what were they expert in ?

quote: Is it me, or wouldn't a geologist or biologist be in a better situation to write a book such as this? Nothing against journalists, but I always get a chuckle when they try and write an article on a scientific topic. Their writing is usually full of errors. One example of this was discussed in a recent thread on neanderthals. The differences between modern human and neanderthal mitochondrial DNA was about half (being lenient) of that between humans and chimps. The lay journalist turned this into "neanderthals are halfway between us and chimps". Of course, this was absolutely incorrect. Not trying to go off topic, just trying to demonstrate that a journalist may not be the best arbiter for such a book.

It interviews various experts as a journalist trys to disprove Creationism. Disprove it? We're talking about Lee Strobel, right? Who already believes in God and an inerrant Bible? Somehow I don't see him trying too hard to "disprove" Creationism.

Is this the same guy that wrote a book called... something like "irrefutable evidence" blah blah blah...?
In high school, I was forced by a girl I had a crush on to read a book that supposedly was written by a once skeptic of Christian Creationism that became a convert after his supposed investigations. I was a naive high school student back then, but I was able to pick out many scientific and philosophical errors. Don't know why I even bothered with her, since she was one of the worst Christian fundie I had ever known. She even believed that the holocaust never happenned because God was too good to let something like that happen. Anyway, I'm gonna stop rambling now.

My friend is reading that book, I remember a while back we used to always debate about the subject, but he still carries around all the common creo misconceptions. Really frustrates me to see him refuse to listen to reason and reject any explanation that doesn't agree with what his parents say.

Of course journalists arn't the best inbetweens, but this book quotes the exact interviews, so what you said can't happen.

Yes in it's entirety. It also has some of his personal stories added in, but the proof is all quoted interviews.
Why don't you like the people who got interviewed? One of the reviews for the book on amazon says that one of the only problems is that he spends to much time buffing his sources.
