Avril who?
Yeah, that was classic. I like Weird Al's mock interview with her; and he song "Constipated". Much better than the original.
I remember back in the 80s when Billy Idol was considered punk....yikes.

I missed punk altogether - too old, I guess - but couldn't the Velvet Underground be considered the godfathers of all that seriously antiauthority music?

You betcha dear.
Velvet Underground can be considered Proto-Punk and many punk bands were influenced by them to some extent.

I graduated in 1986 near the end of the punk scence, so pretty much missed it, but I did manage to see Social D in concert and loved them. I still listen to them. I also saw D.R.I. live (in a tiny bar in Reno, NV), but I think their music may be the transition from punk to speed metal and slam-dancing to moshing.
I'm sorry I missed the punk scene, though, it sounds like it was about something more than just hard music. I didn't know that.
I do remember that the punks in my age-group were the skaters.
You know what? I miss having only a few types of rock music: soft rock, classic rock, heavy metal, thrash metal, punk, etc.
Has anyone seen all the types of rock music now? It's crazy. Indie rock, thrash, pop punk, post-punk, death metal, heavy metal, alternative rock, progressive metal, gothic, grunge, black metal, hard rock, power metal, thrash metal, post-rock, metalcore, doom metal, folk metal, viking metal, nu-metal. I think I've even seen something called devil rock and Screamo. WTF???

Power Pop
Three chords and a cloud of hair spray?

Not all punk, but...
Well, I saw Pere Ubu open for the Pixies in the Oberlin College gymnasium, went to Lollapalooza the first year before Trent Reznor started trying to be Marylin Manson Lite and Ministry and Jane's Addiction were not all that big yet, saw the Violent Femmes and Siouxie and the Banshees in Ohio, and also The Breeders and Nirvana at the Armory in Philadelphia.
Let's see, have seen The Cure a couple of times, too.

Re: Not all punk, but...
I allways thought of the Violent Femmes as accoustic punk

English 1970s punk
Doing my paper round the morning the Sex Pistols first hit the headlines in 1976 (for swearing on a regional evening TV programme).
Seeing the Cure and Joy Division live in 1979 or 1980, the Cure at the fashionable Marquee club in London, Joy Division (who were unknown at the time) at the distinctly unfashionable Bolton Institute of Technology.

The true mystery of the world is the visible, not the invisible

Just missed out at by being a little too young when The Jam, Clash and Stranglers came to town. Made do live with lesser known lights such as Northern Irelands Stiff Little Fingers. I went to my first punk gig (the Boomtown Rats (Bob Gelfdofs outfit) in cowboy boots which were all the rage then and felt like a right wally. Saw U2 when they were hauling crowds of 500 and spat (as one did then) at the Edge. Little did we know.
Madly into drumming, I discovered The Police around 1979 who had the best drummer I have ever heard and I promptly dumped the infantile musicianmanship of punk band
The Clash's London Calling still raise the hairs on my neck the odd time I hear it though ....

I know what you mean....
Things used to be simple, but now it seems when someone records a song, it is just another subdivision of another genre that has already been subdivided than Larry Flint's video collection!
Power Pop? I've heard Rush described as Power Pop, also heard them described as Progressive, Synth Pop; I just think they are good (although intelligent) rock.
Rox, I have to ask; where did you get that avatar? I love it!

What WERE the Police?
You know, I never realized how good Stewart Copeland actually was, but someone else echoed your thoughts, and I wanted to listen for myself. Although I am not a drummer (guitarist), I just never really paid attention to him.
I am acurious, although he did amazing things with such a small set; in what other ways was he great? From a technical standpoint, if you will.
