Not that I was some huge fan of Hunter S. Thompson or Sandra Dee, but I was surprised to find that no one mentioned their deaths in the Coffeee House. Given that we've even had a thread for the death of Max Schmelling, I'd have thought at least Thompson would have rated something.
Is there anything people have to say about these guys, or is it all bad?
I didn't really like Thompson's writing style, and I'm not into drugs (or guns like he was), but more recently I had become aware of the messages he was trying to make in his writing and I found myself agreeing with much of it.
Sandra Dee I have no knowledge of, but I assume she was pretty popular in her day.

I must admit, that all I know about Sandra Dee is how she is described by Rizzo in Grease.

Yesterday, Counterpunch ran the "obituary" for Nixon that Thompson wrote.
Edited to add: Warning, the article describes Nixon in very unflattering terms, and will enrage people who like Nixon and/or people who think that the dead should be shown respect.

Well, I was a fan of Sandra Dee but had no idea who Thompson was. It will be interesting to analyze which had the greater impact on society.

I liked Thompson but didn't know who Sandra Dee was. I guess we are opposites!
Also, Zdzislaw Beksinski was found stabbed to death in his apartment. This has been a very bad week.

hunter s thompson
I thought Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was an absolutely hilarious book, but overall I thought Thompson's writing style - at least the articles I have read - was contrived and, quite frankly, masturbatory. By that I mean, I'm certain he derived a great deal of pleasure writing them, but that didn't mean I wanted to read them.
I don't think he ever quite approached the counter-culture icon status of a William Burroughs because he tried too hard to call attention to how 'whacky' he was. Perhaps that's why he pulled a Hemmingway and offed himself. One last plea for attention.
I do recommend Fear and Loathing to anyone who finds outrageous manic drug humor amusing.
