The answer might be listed somewhere but I'll ask anyway: May I link to EvC Forum from my new website? I just figured out how to make one, and I think I've figured out how to link to other sites and I think it'd fit the theme of my site to have a link here. Any administrators have a problem with this?

You don't need permission from just any ol' admin. You need permission from El Jefe himself. Percy owns the site, so it is him you need to ask. (while he's giving you permission, maybe he'll give me permission also ) AdminAsgara Queen of the Universe

Re: Percy
No offense to Percy, but I'm not so sure he has any choice himself really. Isn't it perfectly legal to link to any public internet site? What you can't do is use any material from this (or any other) site without permission, unless of course that material is in the public domain.

Re: Percy
Isn't it perfectly legal to link to any public internet site? It's perfectly legal to link to the home page of any public internet site. A link to anything other than a home page runs a risk (albeit almost always an infinitesimal one), depending on jurisdiction, the site owners policis and proclivity for suing, and the nature of what is linked to. Some links on the subject at Re: Copyright (an intra-site link which I'm pretty sure Percy won't sue me for! )

Re: Percy
Hey berberry, You might be technically right, but I believe it is only courteous to ask the owner's permission. Some sites come right out and give open permission. Some ask that a particular icon be used. I have seen some that ask for explicit permission. AdminAsgara Queen of the Universe

Linking
I not only have no objections to links to any page at EvC Forum, I encourage it. Be sure to submit your site to the major search engines like Yahoo! and Google. I know nothing about the legal side of things, but I've been pretty free in linking to any and all sites, plus I've been fairly mercenary about "requisitioning" from other sites anything I like, and I've never incurred anyone's displeasure so far. My modus operandi is that as long as I'm not selling anything, I don't feel I have to take much care with things like copyright, ownership, etc. Even if I'm legally wrong, I'm certainly not worth suing. If and when I start selling the board software, it will contain nothing proprietary from other people, websites or corporations.

Re: Linking
Providing you link to a site, rather than drawing their content into your site you cannot be done for anything regardless of whether you link to the home page or a contained page.

Re: Percy
That makes sense, Asgara. I didn't mean to sound flippant, but I've linked to this site at threads on other boards and I've linked to a number of other sites in threads on this board. It would be cumbersome to always request permission for doing so. There's nothing wrong with requesting permission, of course, but it shouldn't be considered discourteous to link without permission.

Re: Linking
Thanks, Percy. I appriciate it. Now the only thing I need to figure out is how to submit my site to search engines. The site's not nearly complete yet and since it's free there's not much to it, but hopefully a few good links will make it more worthwhile.

Jesus! My respect for the danes has suddenly dropped, and they're normally such sane folks. I stand corrected.
