"The streets of our country are in turmoil. The universities are filled with students rebelling and rioting. Communists are seeking to destroy our country. Russia is threatening us with her might, and the Republic is in danger. Yes - danger from within and without. We need law and order! Without it our nation cannot survive
I found this at a website I will divulge later but does anyone here recognize the origin of this statement?I was surprised at the author.

Well, the quote has been floating around for decades but is only attributed to him as a schoolboy. I have never been able to pin down a firm reference. Since it was supposed to have been stated in 1931 and he had already keft school at the time, I would rate it as at least questionable.

Select the entire quote. Then google it.

Well the most credible source I could find with google says that it is a fake.
http://www.aol.bartleby.com/73/155.html
But I'd be interested in which parts people find surprising.

Another quote attributed to the same speaker:
"If you tell a lie loud enough and often enough, after a while people will believe it."
Perhaps his legacy to the current US administration?

PaulK What would be interesting would be if it were true instead of a propaganda ploy which is what it may be according to this website.
http://www.propagandacritic.com/articles/ct.sa.fear.html

You paddle your kayak up the river from your camp to fetch your camera which you left on a rock upstream a bit. The river flows at a uniform 2 mi/hr. You paddle (on still water) at a uniform 3 mi/hr. It takes 30 minutes to reach your camera. If you paddle all the way back to your camp, how long will the return trip take?

The web page you cited assumes that the quote is genuine and uses it as an example of propaganda.
If you mean that the quote would be more interesting if what it said was true (in the Germany of 1932) then I have to disagree. If it were genuine it would be more interesting BECAUSE it is such a clear example of propaganda - precisely for the reason it appears on the link you provided.

Why were you surprised? It seems like exactly the sort of rhetoric one would expect.
