Today I ran into this quote:
quote:
No man has a good enough memory to be a successful liar. - Abraham Lincoln
It didn't sound like Lincoln to me, so I Googled it and found dozens of sites attributing the quote to Lincoln, and none attributing it to anyone else. The quote never varied - there were no variations. However, not one site provided the origin of the quote, and it doesn't appear in Bartlett's.
So I call foul unless the origin of the quote can be uncovered.

If I recall correctly, you ran into that same quote some time ago when I used it, and you did the same Google search with the same results.

If true then you're in lofty company - the quote appeared today in a New York Times opinion piece. I posted a comment asking if anyone knew the origin of the quote, but the NYT makes it nigh impossible to track down old comments. But trying anyway...nope, still no way to find old comments. If anyone replied to my comment I'll never know.
