I keep looking at the sodding calendar. I am fairly certain that it's early 2015. The presidential election, I keep looking it up, is in November 2016. And yet people keep telling me that the primary season is upon us. I think the whole world has gone mad.
And yet, here we are. Here we fucking are. God help us all.
So, once again, this is the thread for discussing the primaries, and if you even think we should be doing so at this point, then may you be cursed with a thousand plagues and may angry wombats eat your underwear. Nonetheless ... here we are.
I shall write my customary bitterly sarcastic synopsis of the candidates at the first moment when I've recovered from the concept that we should even be thinking about this crap right now.

Republicans are a victim of their own gerrymandering. If we tally the House votes, more people voted for Democrats than Republicans, yet Republicans hold a huge majority in the House. This is due to gerrymandering. In order to hold on to these ill got gains, they pander to the base which is their ticket to winning the gerrymandered districts.
When you move this to a national election, they simply don't have the votes. Moving hard to the right to ensure control of Congress only weakens their chances of winning the White House. Their strategy has been to sacrifice their chances at the White House in order to control Congress. They are afraid that if they play straight up on both fronts that they will lose both.
The last Republican to win the presidency without a Nixon or a Bush on the ticket was Herbert Hoover, 1929-1933.

Of course, one should note that Nixon was on the ticket five times and won four times, while different G. Bushes were on the ticket six times with five wins by my counting from memory. What kind of stat is this?

In Canadian history there was a considerable amount of emphasis on the importance of "responsible government" - i.e. if Parliament loses confidence in the Prime Minister and Cabinet, they can boot him out. Unfortunately, there's a movement afoot now to set that aside and emulate your inferior system.

You could have a mix of the two systems. You could elect a President independently of Parliament, but still make it possible to have a vote of no confidence through the Parliament.
Although, a lame duck President does make for interesting politics.
Well, Ted Cruz is the first to officially announce his candidacy, and he's off to a flying start, because in the very speech he did so, he pledged to "repeal every word of Common Core", unaware, apparently, of the fact that it's, y'know, not a federal law.
