Author | Topic: Is this forum getting swamped, because of too many messages per day? | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
Adminnemooseus Inactive Administrator |
Of course, my answer is yes.
I've made attempts to slow down Crashfrog, and Rei is going pretty wild also. Starting about 7/21/03, the messages per day rate increased, and since then it has been AVERAGING about 170 messages per 24 hours. There has been 22 days with greater than 200 messages, 11 days with greater than 250 messages, and 2 days with greater than 300 messages. We went through a bit of a lull, these past 5 days. Still, the slowest day was 122 messages per 24 hours. Weekends are normally slower, but we just set a Sunday record with 165 messages per 24 hours. To me, all this means that there is flat out too much happening, to keep up on the reading. Probably, there are special messages getting buried before they can be appreciated by the masses. Once again, I'm asking that members try to improve on the quality to quantity ratio (or call it "the signal to noise"). Adminnemooseus

Is this from an "I'm a moderator, I have to read everything" poitn of view ? Because I don't think that there are too many posts as an ordinary user. I just look at fewer topics.
(And being offline from Friday evening until Sunday evening I had a bit of catching up to do on Sunday).

Seriously, my biggest concern about too many messages is that people won't be able to keep track of discussions, or might miss replies. If people aren't having these kinds of problems then I guess there aren't too many messages, but I know that *I'm* having these kinds of problems. The site has a few features for helping keep track of messages and discussions, but I think some further improvements would be helpful. I add new features as I have time, but I have no plans for any improvements in the near term. ------------------

Well, it's up to people to avoid getting entangled in too many topics.
And there's an easy, if perhaps obscure, way of finding out if you've missed replies - so long as people actually use the right "reply" button - as I'm sure you know.

I'm reading everything (well, I leave out Brad's msgs). It does take time and I skim some more lightly than others.
Mostly worth the time though. That said, we can always strive to improve quality. (me for sure :$ )

I'm with Ned. I skim through some of the threads and focus more carefully on others. There are a couple I completely ignore. I can see if you read each and every post that the quantity would be overwhelming, but I don't think most people do so I have not noticed an increase or decrease.....ok, maybe a decrease since Syamsu's threads died down...finally

This needs to be done. I'm out of here!
Iwent thru a period of seriously addressing topics and starting quite a few in the process of reading posts which prooved not to be what the sensitive hand of the admins enabled to become of the use made in the cite as it was really only the BOOK NOOK that I showed up. The visuals have only made it more of an issue that people can figure out more things to say about the poster rather than what was posted. For me this has moved further away from attention to the topic content and I guess incidentally decreased the the quality. Only Mammy really seems to be responding to me but time also doesnt work for me neither as the avatars make the posting return cycle expected to be faster than it was. This is unfornate for I would like to slow down the discussion to really get some things done that I have been trying since I was not even known as an Uncle.

Hey Brad, you don't have to leave. It's the people who post too many messages. Not the 'quality' posters - like yourself.

Would the administrators be willing to put up a maximum posting level in order to give us an idea of when too much is occuring?I am guilty in a big way lately and I suppose it is time to cool my heels so let us at least see what needs to be accomplished in order to clear up the work load on the admins.
Also I agree with brad that we should be more adherent to the subject we are discussing. |

The threads that go from 4 posts to 89 in a few hours kill me, and sometimes I give up on them. Other times, if I think it's worth it, I skim them as quickly as I can to try and stay caught up.
I don't know that there's anything to do about it, though. You can encourage people to keep the quality to quantity ratio up, but I think limiting posts would be a real mistake. It doesn't seem like the kind of thing web forums would do, somehow. This one is still real quality, even though I haven't had time to be around in a couple months.

How about a Poster Bolster segment where members critique and admonish members. I'd certainly be open to input from other members as to things about my performance and how I might improve the way I post which any may wish to express. It could be a segment in which those who care to participate can enter their username indicating their willingness to be critiqued by other members, including, but not limited to administrators and moderators who wish to participate.
This might also allow members who are critiqued to explain why they do this or that. Like I don't usually state why I edit messages, because most of my edits are for reasons to minor to explain. Of course, on the other hand, alas another forum segment would be just one more for admin to read.

A couple of comments:
1) One posibility to also consider, is that the heavy message quantity may be putting (am I playing golf?) a heavy load on the involved creationist minority. 2) I started the all topics database at the beginning of the year. The driving force at the time was to explore what we could do to cut down on the server storage space needs. We were looking at possibly deleting topics to cut down on space needs. Since that time, the overall message count has doubled. Percy/Admin has done much work to use server space more efficiently, but I'm sure the overall server space requirements has gone up very significantly. Seemingly, we are destined to hit another crunch point, where storage requirements will need to somehow be cut back, or Percy will need to spend the extra money for more storage space. So I remind all, that Percy is the financer that makes this forum possible. Please try to spend his money wisely (not Wise-like). Cheers,Adminnemooseus

First, I kinda like Buz's idea about post quality/poster quality feedback. In addition to what Buz suggests, I'd personally like to see a voting system whereby one could rate a post's quality without having to reply to the post. A similar system for members would be nice as well.
