quote:
There had been philosophers before him, of course: strong men like Thales and Heraclitus, subtle men like Parmenides and Zeno of Elea, seers like Pythagoras and Empedocles; but for the most part the had been physical philosophers; they had sought for the physis or nature of external things, the laws and constituents of the material and measurable world. That is very good said Socrates; but there is an infinitely worthier subject for philosophers than all these trees and stones, and even all those stars; there is the mind of man. What is man, and what can he become?
The devotion shown by many millions to the study of the world, as it is, and as it is seen, I feel is tragic. For one to study science, and to become brilliant in the ways of measurability, postulation, and recording of the observable happenings in nature, one loses sight of purpose. Where is there meaning in Science, In Nature? Where can one be eternally gratified on this earth? Among us are those that have strong beliefs for science, and for what they would call reality. But is Nature all that matters? Does Nature take precedence over a GOD? Can't you see that as Socrates puts it, these rocks, stones, and stars are meaningless, worthless beyond what good can come from medicine, and for the helping of humanity? Astronomy is a useless field, if not done for sheer enjoyment of the beauty that exists. I simply can't see why all of you here have devoted so much time to things that give no purpose, and that do not ultimately produce truth... Nature is not God.
As the Ancient Hindus say;
The world is illusory, Brahman alone is real.The world has tricked millions into believing that it takes precedence over life, and needs devotion. Needs the attention that it gets from science. It's an illusion, it doesn't matter, and Nature cannot show one transendance, nirvana, truth, heaven, and GOD. And when I tell you this, you shun me, you tell me that what is visible does matter, and you cry out in annoyance, at the slightest possibility that what you have been thinking about, and writing down, is not true, and has no significance, none of it will matter, when this earth is gone, and when you die, you will not have reason to study Mathematics, or Science. It won't matter. When you meet GOD, he will care about what you spent your life doing, and did you
find truth? Did you
find him?
So I ask you; when you lie dying, will you be thinking of science?
