What do you guys know about thermo-depolymerization? It's been an couple years since it commercially came out. Anyone have any knowledge about whether or not its proven to be viable? Edited by Adminnemooseus, : Added "(breaking stuff down into fuel oil)" to topic title. Also changed beginning from "t" to "T".

From what I understand, it actually takes more energy to perform the process than what we could get out of it. If we really need fossil fuel that much, I would rather put my money in oil shale.

I don't know if you checked out wiki? there is one plant currently using this technology to produce about 4-500 barrels of oil a day using turkey offal and the like. The cost of the oil was $1.90 per gallon in Jan 2005

Wow. Turkey offal. I spent a year or so helping to generate that back a near-lifetime ago. But they turned all those beaks and o-rings into turkey food back then. You do not want to work in a turkey plant. Trust me.

From what I understand, it actually takes more energy to perform the process than what we could get out of it. Used to be the case, because they'd need to expend energy to remove the water. A more recent method uses the water rather than needing to be rid of it. At the end of the process the water is extremely hot and this energy can be used in the next cycle of the process making it more efficient still.

In 2003 this may have been the case, but it's 5 years later. The lack of scientific literature bothers me though. You'd figure in 5 years they would have figured out the ratios.

Those numbers are still old. I checked that out a while back, and there's nothing new on it aside from the lawsuit over bad smells from the Carthage plant. Technically you can use any carbon based thing. From people to manure, to scrap plastics....

You're saying it wrong. I just saw this movie again a couple months ago. "It's people! TDP is made of people!"

Doesn't that scream PRIONS to anyone else? Yup. But we knew nothing of prions in 1971. I thought eating processed feathers and guts was bad enough....

Heh. Thanks for the correction. I figured I'd probably be off.

So has the practice of feeding turkeys to turkeys ended?

I don't know. I'll eat turkey now myself, but it took a while after I left that job to start again.
