I don't get it. Sometimes it says that there are a reply waiting for me and sometimes it doesn't. How does the site know which person that have replied to my message needed/wanted my reply back? The Laminator

I has nothing to do with the site knowing who "wanted" a reply. It just counts turns. You make a post, someone replies to you, it is now your turn. If you reply back it is now their turn. The only drawback is that many posts need no reply but the system does not know this. A poster could have 30 threads with "replies awaited" and nothing really to reply too. Another poster could have 5 threads with replies waited on and be on everyone's "shit" list because of ignoring important points. This is what I thought at first, but it's not the case. For example, buzsaw replied to me, and I got a yes in the column. However, Rand Al'Thor replied after I replied to buzsaw and I never got a yes in the reply column. This is just one example out of many. The replies that never showed up as needing a reply from me seem to always be the ones that do not need answering.

Unfortunately it also only keeps track of the latest reply in a particular thread. Rand could reply to 20 of your posts in any particular thread but if the last reply was Buz's one and only reply there, that is the only one that would show up. Hmm...Could this be why Rrhain never replied to my last post in "A layman's questions about universes"? If you check the bottom of my post at http:// EvC Forum: A layman's questions about universes you'll see that there are no replies listed. Yet, if you check the appropriate thread (currently the ninth from the top) in Rrhain's message index at http:// http://www.evcforum.net/cgi-bin/membermsglist.cgi?action=... you'll see that the "Replies Await" box is empty. By the way, I apologize for commandeering your thread, Lam, but this may be a similar problem and I was just curious. Thanks Asgara (or anyone else) for whatever help you can offer.

I can't answer as to why Rr didn't reply to anyone, but Rr did reply to Buz later and this is Rr's latest post in that thread. The latest post is the one that shows in the post list. AdminAsgara Queen of the Universe http://asgarasworld.bravepages.comhttp://perditionsgate.bravepages.com

Yeah, that's what I figured. He had already replied to me a couple of times, in that thread, but I noticed that his reply to Buz came after my last post, and as such, he may have missed it. We were discussing a topic I have tremendous interest in and I considered "bumping" it, with another reply to his post, but I didn't want to seem rude. Well, thanks anyway, Asgara.

No prob Tony, and I don't think it would be rude to bump a thread with a reminder to someone you were in a discussion with. AdminAsgara Queen of the Universe http://asgarasworld.bravepages.comhttp://perditionsgate.bravepages.com

Well, yeah...maybe. The thing is, I felt a little guilty monopolizing Rrhain's time. I wasn't debating with him. In fact, I was trying to learn something from him. ![](http://www.evcforum.net/Images/Smilies/biggrin.gif) He, being a mathematician, has insights into certain concepts that I find absolutely fascinating. But I felt kind of bad taking up his time with that when he has far more serious posts to reply to. There are important issues discussed here and I resisted bumping the thread, in case he didn't have time to get to everything. I didn't want him to think that he had to spend time on me, to the exclusion of more important replies. Yeah, I know...I'm weird!

Reply notice by e-mail
There is an option at your profile page, to receive an e-mail from when you get a reply to one of your messages. This is the surest way to track such things. You will get an e-mail for every message directed towards you. Even if there are multiple replies to a certain single message. Of course, this still doesn't mean that a reply from you is called for. Re: Reply notice by e-mail
Hey, thanks for the info, Moose. Actually I already knew that but thanks all the same. ![](http://www.evcforum.net/Images/Smilies/smile.gif) The thing is, that only works one way, right? I mean, I'll know when I get a reply but not necessarily the people that I reply to, correct? As far as my post goes, I really think it was just an honest mistake by Rrhain. I hope it didn't sound like I was accusing him of ignoring me. It's easy to see how it could have happened. Even though my post in that thread is waiting for his reply, it isn't actually registering that fact in Rrhain's message index, linked above (in Message 5). It would be very easy for him to scan his messages and skip that thread because it didn't show any replies to him. I hope I didn't come across the wrong way there. Anyway, thanks again! I appreciate your help, Moose.
