while we're waiting for the other shoe . . .
i drink store brand instant in plain coldest tap water, which makes a friendin wisconsin almost gag over the phone, but i have given up beers/ales/alcohols since totalling my car into the back of a cop car in 2019. and i still drink a lot. only now it's just a lot of cheap black coffee. i'd imagine a lot of folks here would have their preferences considerablymore sophisticated. I’ll drink instant if that’s all there is but ground coffee is so much better. At home, I use an Aeropress and I grind the beans by hand (that takes time but I prefer not to buy electric gadgets for everything). Cafetière’s and pour over filters are pretty easy to use, too.

In regards to drinks my preferences are anything but sophisticated.
I keep ground coffee around and I will agree wholeheartedly that a warm cup on a cool morning is a treat, but I always use creamer. My dear sweetie( my Mother) who passed in 2020 was the only other person I know who liked black coffee unsweetened. Of course that brings up the real reason for coffee (for many, at least) and that is the kick from the caffeine. The only advantage that I could see in regard to Instant Coffee is the time factor. At my age, Ive got more time than money, however. (So far! )

I drink Puerto Rican coffee. Whole bean freshly ground
I buy directly from the island. Usually directly from the roaster. We used Keurig K-cups in a Keurig unit for years, then switched to grinding our own coffee and putting it in Keurig reuseable K-cups. A Keurig unit only lasts about 3 or 4 years for us, so by the time the last one died we'd got tired of the Keurig nonsense of trying to detect whether a valid K-cup (i.e., one who had paid them a licensing fee) was being used and not making the coffee if it decided it wasn't.
So we bought a Cuisinart K-cup coffeemaker. Unlike a Keurig it doesn't have to heat up a reservoir first. It has an instantaneous heat kind of design, and it doesn't care what kind of K-cup you use. The reusable K-cup that comes with it is deep and holds a lot of coffee. I like strong coffee, so I buy pre-ground espresso coffee. I estimate I pay about 10¢ or 20¢ a cup. --Percy

I like French roast fine ground (almost espresso) dripped through unbleached filters. I make a single cup at a time and always drank it black, except for some Irish cream on weekends. After I retired I started adding artificial sweetener (carmel syrup) and nonfat creamer. Limit 2 cups a day. The beans I get are called Double French roast, the store also has French roast, but the double has a smoky flavor I like.

I stopped drinking coffee a few years ago.
But yes, until then it was mostly store brand instant. Yes, a good brewed coffee can taste better. But it isn't worth the trouble. These days, I am mostly a water-totaller.--> -->Fundamentalism - the anti-American, anti-Christian branch of American Christianity <-- <--

My tastes are also not sophisticated. Basically, I drink whatever's in the coffee mess -- both in the military and civilian work as a software engineer there would always be a big pot of coffee.
My friend was the opposite and was very particular about her coffee (had to be a particular blend from Starbucks) ... also about her bottled water, so when she was in the hospital I would bring her her preferred water. In Europe she didn't care for the coffee, not even in Italy, so as a treat in Strasbourg I took her to a Starbucks I had spotted in my Maps app. My last job was from 1995 to my retirement in 2018. My job interview was at 8AM. Before going in, my boss-to-be took us to the break room for coffee. Since we just emptied that coffee urn, I immediately made a fresh pot for the next person, pausing only to ask how many scoops. Before noon, they called me with a job offer. My version of the events was that the deciding factor must have been that I was willing to make coffee instead of leaving a thin layer of coffee in the urn (maybe about 10 ml) as far too many co-workers tend to do. I'll have a cup of coffee in the morning because I like it, but I'm not dependent on the mythical "first cup". I use Trader Joe's French Roast in a Bialetti Moka Express. I add sugar and creamer in my coffee, though never in tea. I also keep some International instant coffee on hand for when I just want a quick cup. My friend had given me a simple drip setup, but I've only tried to use it once but couldn't figure out how to measure how much water I'm adding as I pour it from my tea kettle so I gave up on it. My father always took his coffee black. In the Navy (he was a Seabee, a "dirt sailor") you could always find coffee, but rarely anything to put in it. He could only have his coffee black, so he learned to like it that way. In a similar vein, right before I enlisted an Air Force vet who had been stationed at Thule, Greenland, told how he would provision his parka (they have big pockets) with survival packets of sugar, creamer, instant coffee, hot cocoa mix, instant soup mixes, etc, since he could always find hot water and maybe coffee, but usually nothing else.

I used to be into the ritual of fresh beans and a French press. I found a nice roaster up in the hills here when I first came to Phoenix. Nothing world fancy. Your typical Columbian, Nicaraguan, Mexican, but fresh harvested and most beautifully roasted. Sometimes I would spring for some Kenyan, Jamaican, or other speciality bean from the internet. I had special sealing bean storage cannisters and a quality grinder.
Timing was everything. I knew the measure of beans to water depending on the roast of the bean, and the chemistry with each. When the water pot started to whistle, I would turn the stove off, grind the beans, place them in the carafe of the French press, move the water off the hot burner it had been simmering on to a cold one and then stop. The ground beans are out gassing some bitter volatiles while the water is coming off its thermal high. One minute usually. Then pour the now 92-93°C water into the carafe and shock the oils, aromatics and volatiles left in the beans into a delectable potion with many layers for the tongue and nose to take in. Four minutes to steep and press the plunger. Enjoy as the magic elixir takes on new tones as it slowly cools with each sip. But I am old old old now and can’t be bothered with the hassle. Sometimes I miss that sensory delight but I’ve become too simple to care for long. So now it’s Taster’s Choice instant mixed in my cup with water boiled in a Pyrex measuring cup in the microwave.Stop Tzar Vladimir the Condemned! |

Some of you may know I am a huge advocate for Puerto Rico. My family ancestral home is Utuado in the central hills. This area is the coffee growing area of the island. Other than Hawai'i, Puerto Rico is the only place in the USA where coffee is grown. For some reason it is not available to buy in most of the US, but is available online. Amazon carries some and it is available to order from Pueto Rico directly. I usually pay about $25-30 for a 2lb bag. So it is not ridiculous.
If you would like to try Puerto Rican ???????? coffee let me know and I will direct you to the sources I use.
