As far as I know, we only dropped two on Japan, though we tested many within our own territories. Not counting Japan, probably ourselves. Again, they were tests, however. I would surely hope so. I have no idea.Edited by Phat, : No reason given.

The US Air Force accidentally dropped a nuclear bomb there. It didn't go off, but it was never recovered.In a training exercise in 1958, a fighter collided with a bomber. The bomber managed to remain air-worthy, but the crew requested permission to jettison the bomb as it posed a detonation risk should the emergency landing be difficult. Actually, we dropped four in Spain, others in North and South Carolina, one missing somewhere in the Mediterranean, several accidentally destroyed in crashes off the US Pacific Coast and at airports in California among other sites. But most were not tests but accidents. Except we kinda don't. The one dropped in South Carolina has never been found, the one in the Med has never been found, the one off Tybee has never been found, the one off the Pacific NW has never been recovered....and those are some of the acknowledged examples.The record has not been good but so far the safety feature and procedures have kept us from a major incident. The bombs and hardware are old though. Incidents like the recent US Naval Ship collisions has made questioning training and staffing reasonable. The bomber deterrent was initially dropped because it posed greater accident risk and less security than the Nuclear Missile Submarines.So before putting nuclear bombs back in the skies over us maybe we need to be sure the hardware, training and procedures offer sufficient assurances of safety to offset the risk.But is that analysis actually being done?

This is really scary, and most of the public have no idea (and likely don't care) until and unless a major accident happens. We are long overdue for an honest confrontation with nuclear bombs. I am starting to feel uncomfortable with the verbal brinksmanship of politics when they juggle things like bombs and missiles around as if they are game pieces on a chessboard. A cornered rat will always fight, and Kim Jong Un wont simply stop doing what he is doing if backed into a corner.And it seems as if the US is behaving irrationally and living in the past rather than facing the reality of the present moment.

Back in the 60s we used to see the contrails of multi-engine aircraft flying due north over Canada. The obvious question was, "What's up there that anybody would conceivably want to go to?" The answer was Russia and the aircraft were B-52s (potentially) carrying nuclear weapons. As it turns out, we were probably in more danger from American broken arrows than we were from Russia.And we used to have an air-raid siren in the playground of our school.

The larger question that we as a society must ask ourselves is how best to prepare for a future getting along with rather than intimidating or being intimidated by the rest of the globe. The current group in power is anti-globalist, nationalist, and not very bright. Some believe that the government and military of the United States have always existed to protect the interests of the wealthy first of all. Is this true, even partially?We need to ask larger questions. Fear is used as a method of control, and our population is being fed fear more often with this administration than with the previous one. Take North Korea. Are they a threat? Yes, and No. They theoretically could cause extreme damage to US interests or to the country itself, but only at the cost of their own lives. But it seems that we are the stupid ones. We spend billions and even trillions on our military. Outdated equipment is only part of the problem. And whats sad is that the average American is not concerned about the interconnectedness of the world...only in preserving an America that is a ghost of the past and which no longer exists or more likely never existed.

HOW ON GOD'S GREEN EARTH IS THE B-52 STILL IN SERVICE? According to what I have read, the B-52s will be used up until at least 2040. They are structurally sound and have many upgrades in the technology. In some ways, they are more trustworthy than a multi-billion dollar replacement.The articles suggest that money has been spent to upgrade the old bombers.

When I was in the war (ie, active duty Air Force), ours was the only 24-hour shop in the Bomb Wing, so the B-52 crews came to us to turn in their flight bags into a secure place after hours. Even then (end of the 1970's) they would comment that their plane was older than they were and should have hit mandatory retirement by then if it were a person. Last we were hearing towards the end of my enlistment (1982), all the B-52's were going to be gathered together so that the many could be cannabalized to keep the few flying. Apparently we haven't come to that.
