WASHINGTON -- NASA will hold a news conference at 2 p.m. EST on Thursday, Dec. 2, to discuss an astrobiology finding that will impact the search for evidence of extraterrestrial life. Astrobiology is the study of the origin, evolution, distribution and future of life in the universe. fromNASA - NASA Sets News Conference on Astrobiology Discovery; Science Journal Has Embargoed Details Until 2 p.m. EST On Dec. 2 So tomorow we may find that some form of life was found somewhere else then Earth. What implications would that bring to the creo or id table? Edited by Adminnemooseus, : Removed the "tomorow" (sic) from topic title and added the "(re: Arsenic-based life form?) to the topic title.

Not likely. I think it is more about some newer methods that have recently been found that might show signs of life.

Do you believe there is life on other planets?
BTW, care to make a friendly wager? I guarantee they have not found anything.

Do you believe there is life on other planets? BTW, care to make a friendly wager? I guarantee they have not found anything. And your source of knowledge is...? Religious belief does not constitute scientific evidence, nor does it convey scientific knowledge.

This is an example of how science works as opposed to how many people (e.g. creationists) think science works. Using flight as an analogy, the story won't be, "Orville Wright walks on the moon!" It'll be more like, "The new wing profile works better than the old one." It'll be one small step, not one giant leap.

Am I reading this correctly? Is Science barred from reporting on this until Dec 2nd? Science is doing the embargoing in that sentence not having the embargo forced upon it. It's very dubious it will be news that must be reported immediately. Holding off for less than a week so a formal news conference can be held is fairly normal as far as I'm aware.

There is speculation that it is about an alleged new form of microbes that acquire their energy from arsenic.

My first gut reaction was that the Kepler satellite had scanned the first exoplanet atmosphere. However, the inclusion of a molecular biologist on the panel tips it towards the bacteria or possibly new findings by one of the Mars probes.

I guarantee they have not found anything. That's going to be a short press conference then. "Ladies and gentlemen of the press, we have called you here to announce that we haven't found anything. Are there any questions? Yes, you at the back. What? No, of course I can't give you any further details. The thing about things which aren't anything is that they don't have any details. Any other questions? Yes, the lady in the front row?
Where and how didn't we find anything? We didn't find anything anywhere. Using any of our instruments. Any other questions? Ah, Murchson of the New York Times, isn't it? Yes, an excellent question. Yes, I am sorry for wasting your time like this. Yes, I know that there have been questions about the long-term viability of the project, but so long as Congress continues to vote us funding, we shall continue our search for intelligence in creationists."

So tomorow we may find that some form of life was found somewhere else then Earth. What implications would that bring to the creo or id table? I should think that the creationist response would break down three ways: (1) This is an evil atheist lie. (2) As no creationist has ever taken a position on this subject, this doesn't prove us wrong. (3) This proves that creationists are right. --- However, the significance of NASA's finding is not clear from their press release: "an astrobiology finding that will impact the search for evidence of extraterrestrial life." Now perhaps that's all the teaser they can give us without announcing straight out that the Martians have landed, or perhaps that is in fact a good description of what they have to announce.
