I'm not sure if this should go here... I'm conceiving of this as a place for people to get feedback on how to format / conceptualize their threads before proposing them. If this should be done directly in the "Proposed New Topics" area, please close this down. Otherwise, I'd like some feedback on how to group and focus some ideas for threads that I have.
I'll post those ideas wherever you tell me they should go.
Thanks!
Ben

My best suggestions
First, I try to keep it to one topic per thread. Also I like to ask simple questions that are pretty well limited so that we stay pretty close to topic. It also usually works best for me when I can ask a specific question.
But then YMMV.

Re: My best suggestions
Thanks Jar.
Actually, I have something slightly more complex (basically a series of related threads) that I'd like to propose, in some order, with some relation. ... so I'd ;liek to describe what I'd like to do, and get feedback on it. I just don't know where the appropriate place for such a discussion is. Finding the appropriate place for that discussion is the point of this post.

Re: My best suggestions
I figured that was where you were going. I've done a few such efforts myself. Start with the most basic point and try to get consensus on that one and then move on.
Start with a suggestion in PNT. Tell the Admins where you think it should go. If it's too complex or liable to wander off the Admins can give you a few suggestions of how to better it. If you include several points in your OP, they can recommend the best way to handle them, as one thread or multiple threads.
It's been my experience though that trying to keep multiple related threads going is about like herding baby ducks.

LOL! That's what i'm trying to avoid, but to do so it would take some 'quasi-administrative effort' by me. So that's why I wanted to check first.
I'm just gonna post the idea here, and then get some feedback. Then, see where it goes.
Thanks Jar.

Re: Bumped the "Style Guide" topic for you
Thanks. I've read the thread, and I saw your message. So, I'll post what I'd like to accomplish, and my idea here.
------------------
I'd like to start a series of threads relating the mind, consciousness, and evolution. I'd like to start threads only as needed, so that discussion can be focused (as much as possible) on a limited number of topics. I'd really like to take some of the moderation for it into my own hands (trying to keep people on topic, starting new threads appropriately, keeping the series of threads related and organized by the OP info for each one). I have no idea how many people would be interested to participate, but I'd like to see what happens.
Below is the basic format for the OP of each thread. I'd like to use the contents of this OP for each related thread that I start. It means I'll be editing the OP for each thread, when a new one gets added.
All of this is simply for the purpose of providing structure, assuming that people are interested to discuss. If not, then all of this is pointless. But I'M ANAL and interested in getting somewhere with this stuff.
Let me know if this is OK. Any suggestions or thoughts are welcome as well.
Thanks!
Ben
P.S. This stems from a message from crashfrog. I'd like to see where we can take this.

[Thread OP Body]
Topic: {Topic}
Sub-topic: {Sub-topic}
This one thread in a series relating the mind, consciousness, and evolution. When studying the mind and consciousness, it is easy to plow winding pathways that lead to dead-ends and confusion. Below are some general guidelines, in order to keep these threads focused and productive.
Here are Basics
  • This is a series of threads; any time we have clearly come to a new topic, I'll propose a new thread for that topic, and (try to) redirect the discussion there.
  • This is a "scientific" discussion on mind and consciousness GIVEN the assumption of evolution; debate about "the metaphysical vs. physical nature of the mind" belongs elsewhere.
  • I'd like to discuss what the consequences of the evolutionary and abiogenesis assumptions are for consciousness.
As such, I'd like to lay down some Basic Assumptions
  • "Macro" and "Micro" evolution occurred
  • There is no God or soul, ONLY biology
  • The mind emerges from the biology
Finally, the Other Threads in this Series:
