I thought it would be nice to fellowship a bit, and share your favorite inventions. I guess list 5 inventions, in no particular order. You can post as many times as you want, and even do a theme. List the theme in the subject box. Here is mine, a mechanical theme: 1. The nut and bolt, or screw thread. 2. The wheel 3. The airplane 4. The steam engine 5. The internal combustion engine

I'm just going to pick one from everybody's list: - Steam Engine
- Bicycle
- Gas Chromatograph*
- Bread
- Beer
* One day, somebody said to himself, "Let's shove it all through a tube and see what comes out the other end."
Disclaimer: The above statement is without a doubt, the most LUDICROUS, IDIOTIC AND PERFECT EXAMPLE OF WILLFUL STUPIDITY, THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN OR HEARD.

Just one - Juggling. It's impossible to imagine the mindset of the first person to wonder how to hold three objects in two hands, or who learned to do it without anybody showing him or her. Juggling is hard enough to learn with the help of someone who knows what you're supposed to do, already. I can't imagine the person who put up with all that practice and dropping with no clear idea of what it was going to be like when they finally got it. Is there any research on the origin of juggling?

Symbolic language
Symbolic language stands atop my list of important inventions, leaving everything else trivial by comparison. ”HM

Interesting choice
While I wouldn't call juggling an invention, it is a skill that requires practice, as you've stated. As to the origin, Wiki has an article on it. As might be expected, its origins are ancient. “This life’s dim windows of the soul, distorts the heavens from pole to pole, and goads you to believe a lie, when you see with and not through the eye.” -William Blake

Do you suppose walking to be more or less difficult than juggling? Me? More. Edited by iano, : change less to more

Do you suppose walking to be more or less difficult than juggling? I don't know. The first juggler wouldn't have had any reference to know how to do it.
