Check out Google Earth for a great way to waste hours on end.

Google has too much money  They are even paying people to take measurements of all the buildings of major cities. I think its awesome how they are finally able to get high resolution stuff for international places as well.

What they need is a dedicated handheld device that combines this client, a high-rez display, a cellular data link, and GPS.
