Author | Topic: Oktoberfest has started, what beer are you drinking? | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Yes I know, a frivolous topic but where I currently live, beer is taken seriously and has a very long tradition. Most breweries in Munich are hundreds of years old.
From my own personal tastes, the best lager is Augustiner (not the Edelstoff but the green labelled). The best pilsner is Jever. The best Weissbier (has yeast floating around in it but tastes good anyway) Franziskaner. My favorite dark beer is Salvator though if you drink it during lent, you tend to forget your name and where you live...and how to walk. What is everyone else drinking?

What is everyone else drinking? Just moved to Columbia, MO, so I'm working my way through St. Louis-area brews. Had a dark beer this week from the New Belgium Brewing Co called 1667, I think. Very good, very toasty and dark. Other than that, for my money, nothing beats a Corona with a lime in the neck, the way my momma taught me. Not exactly in the Oktoberfest theme, tho. Back in Minnesota I liked a beer called "Firebrick" from the Schell brewers (about an hour from my college town.)

Can't afford better than Goose Island. But fortunately, Goose Island's pretty tasty.

Right now I'm all excited because the local supermarket ( we only have one chain to choose from) just started to carry Urquell.

Almost forgot, a bit of competition for Augustiner (and not a German beer like all the others on my list) Budvar i.e Budweiser...no not the cat urine in a bottle sold in the US but the original Czech beer.

Pilsner Urquell is damn fine beer. It is good enough to get imported to Germany...on the other hand, I saw Foster's here in a store once.

There may well be more really nice beers today than at anytime in history. While I seem to drink less beer every year, I must admit I do enjoy beer more than most any alchoholic brew other than bourbon.

Actually, the trend is going the other way. Many breweries are in financial trouble (in Europe) because beer consumption among younger people is down. Drinking wine is more in fashion so beer sales have sagged. Many German breweries have been bought up by the Belgians for example. As many breweries are microbreweries or even monks brewing beer in their monasteries like Andech's which makes really good stuff, I hope they survive even if some of the larger breweries fade out.
Or if Dan Carrol would lay off the drinks named after waterfowl and switch to something better he could save the entire industry

Man, first the local pastry chefs union, now this. How many industries am I gonna be expected to save this week?
At least it's not as bad as the Christmas season, when I'm expected to learn a valuable lesson about the true meaning of something or other every time I save an industry. "Good evening. Holy cow I thought Oktoberfest was mid to late Oktober! I was planning on getting to Munich to drink some beer and eat some real wurst with ya.
How long does it last? As for your question I am not much of a beer guy. When I do drink it has usually been heineken (when other people have it), or when I get to choose: Guinness extra stout. I guess I like to chew my beer. How does that salvator compare? holmes "...what a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away.."(D. Bros)

Guinness extra stout. It's not just for breakfast anymore!

It's not just for breakfast anymore! I have to admit that a glass of that and I could skip a meal. They certainly won't be running commercials for it debating "great taste" vs "less filling". holmes "...what a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away.."(D. Bros)

No, but I hear they're planning on digging up Clara Peller for a few "where's the beef" ads.

Hi holmes,
Oktoberfest ends October 3rd. For whatever reason, Oktober fest is mostly in September. If you can make it we should meet and throw back a few beers..and a grill hendl or two...with the million other Americans who are here annoying the Germans Salvator is not really like Guinness. It is kind of hard to describe. It is pitch black. It has a slightly sweet taste. You cannot detect the taste of the alcohol at all even though it has about 10% and it is served in March at the Nockerberg festival. Drink a 1 L glass of the stuff and even Brad McFall's posts will start to make sense.

Oktoberfest ends October 3rd. For whatever reason, Oktober fest is mostly in September. Just can't wait to get to those kegs is the reason... I'm not sure how fast I can schedule something, but I'll try. I have a feeling I won't be able to go this weekend or the following. Does it have much going on during the week, and are you available during the week? (The last weekend is especially important for me to be here as there will be massive demonstrations against the fascist in charge of this country... and currently the EU. By the way, have you been reading about how he wants all EU citizens to have ones single moral value system?) {added in--- salvatore: pitch black, sweet, knocks you around? If I come I'll be wanting some of THAT.} This message has been edited by holmes, 09-22-2004 11:41 AM holmes "...what a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away.."(D. Bros)
