A Princeton scholar draws attention to how this discovery may indicate the historic accuracy of the gospel of John.
thoughts?
``Scholars have said that there wasn't a Pool of Siloam and that John was using a religious conceit'' to illustrate a point, said New Testament scholar James H. Charlesworth of the Princeton Theological Seminary. ``Now we have found the Pool of Siloam ... exactly where John said it was.''
A gospel that was thought to be ``pure theology is now shown to be grounded in history,'' he said.

Sure, and Heinrich Schliemann's discoveries indicated the historical accuracy of the Iliad.

More abuse of archaeology?
Where does the anonymous author of John sat the pool was, and how do we know it is the same pool?
What does the accuracy of a landmark have to do with whether jesus did anything?
Brian.

Re: More abuse of archaeology?
I have a question, I am doing some personal research on the accuracy of biblical archeology, I understand the problems with verifying artifacts, but are there any authentic sites or artifacts you could point me to?
Thank you very much.

supposedly confirmed Biblical structures
Here are some supposedly confirmed Biblical structures
Gibeon pool (at el-Jib)
Hezekiah's tunnel under Jerusalem
Jericho's walls
Critics claim they fell due to an earthquake and do not date to the time of Joshua's conquest; nonetheless, it is a remarkable coincidence that they exist at all considering that the site was stratified and unoccupied during the late period when the critics say the book of Joshua was written.
Lachish siege ramp of Sennacherib
Siloam pool (just unearthed in 2004)
Second Temple (confirmed by Western/Wailing wall constructed by Herod the Great)
19 tumuli located west of Jerusalem, undoubtedly dating to the Judean monarchy, but possibly representing sites of memorial ceremonies for the kings as mentioned in 2 Chronicles 16:14, 21:19, 32:33, and the book of Jeremiah 34:5
Merneptah stela (Egyptian reference to Israelites in the land of Canaan)

Authentic archaeological sites?
Mail me at 0205100j@student.gla.ac.uk and I'll send you some info on biblical artefacts, and a reading list.
My own area is Old Testament, specifically Israelite origins, I won't be much help with New Testament archaeology.
Brian.

Dating of King Hezekiah's Tunnel verified by scientists
Hebrew University of Jerusalem
Dating of King Hezekiah's Tunnel verified by scientists
Modern radiometric dating of the Siloam Tunnel in Jerusalem shows that it was excavated about 700 years before the Common Era, and can thus be safely attributed to the Judean King Hezekiah. This is the first time that a structure mentioned in the Bible (Kings II 20:20; Chronicles II 32:3, 4) has been radiometrically dated.
A report on the study of the Siloam Tunnel will be published on Sept. 11 in the scientific journal Nature. The research was conducted by Dr. Amos Frumkin of the Geography Department at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Dr. Aryeh Shimron of the Israel Geological Survey, and Dr. Jeff Rosenbaum of Reading University in England.
Radiometric dating is based on the decay of radioactive elements. These act as physical clocks, allowing researchers to estimate the age of the material being examined. In this case, the scientists used measurements of carbon-14 for dating organic material within the plaster of the Siloam Tunnel, as well as uranium-thorium for dating stalactites which grew in the tunnel since its construction.
Dating specific Biblical structures is extremely difficult because of poor archaeological preservation, identification uncertainty, scarcity of datable materials, and restricted scientific access into well-identified worship sites.
The presumption that King Hezekiah constructed the Siloam Tunnel was based until today upon the Biblical text itself and the characteristics of the Siloam inscription (located in a museum in Istanbul), although the inscription does not say who constructed the tunnel. The new findings refute a recent claim that suggested a much later date for the tunnel. The complicated tunneling project initiated by King Hezekiah brought water into the city of Jerusalem, protecting this valuable resource during the siege in 701 B.C.E. by the Assyrians, under their King Sancherib.
The half-kilometer long tunnel was constructed without using intermediate shafts, an engineering innovation for its day. A simpler method, used for thousands of years, was based on excavating vertical shafts from the surface. Short, horizontal tunnels were then cut from the shafts' bottoms, and then easily connected to each other. The Siloam Tunnel is one of the oldest structures in use up to the present day

There is also some current talk about uncovering David's Palace.

Re: More abuse of archaeology?
Jackie: I would suggest the Cave of Zedekiah underneath Jerusalem close to Damascus Gate. The cave is the quarry where the stones for the 1st and 2nd Temples were fashioned. Piles of rock chips stil exist when they were chipped off the rocks.

More proof of biblical historical accuracy
The pool of Siloam is first mentioned in Nehemiah 3:15
Jesus healed a blindman and told him to go wash in the pool of Siloam in Jonh 9:6
Is it the same pool or coincidence?

do you answer questions or just run away?
If I ask some questions - are you going to actually answer them or is it just the normal waste of time?

Nice and simple starter for ten
Let's start nice and simple, we can get more complex as we go along -
This proves that the writer of John was familiar with Jerusalem. How is this different from the writers of Kong King being familar with the Empire State building? The bible also mentions Rome and Bethlehem.
So what?
What does it actually prove?
