I'm proud of my country (poll of world beliefs)

According to a recent poll, by the bbc: BBC NEWS | Programmes | wtwtgod | UK among most secular nations Of the countries surveyed, the UK does best in terms of secularism (still under 50%, but hey), has only 31% of people who believe their God is the only true God, has least belief that being religious makes you a better person, and the highest number believing the world would be a better place without religion.I'm so proud of my country.

I must say I am proud of your Country as well..... about 75% to 80% here in the states are religious... or at least Believe in the God.... The first Country to have free religion seems to give you very little freedom to believe what you want.... You are looked at as Evil if you say you are Atheist or agnostic in Public it seems...

Blimey - is this true or for humor?That's outrageous, is this just a US thing? No wonder the across oceaners come down on me hard, they probably think it's the same in Britain or something...Ho hum. Surely you're not serious though, would you really be looked at as evil? - how dis-respectful for people to impose their beliefs on you like that - and I thought it was myth!

Good reasons to be proud, Mr Jack. But we down-unders are ahead on a couple of issues. Australia has actually elected an atheist for prime minister, namely Bob Hawk, and the New Zealanders have set the pace for the rest of the world regarding women's rights and voting.

I remember my grandmother saying something really close to this but it came home hard after 9-11 after some nice, holy church women informed all of us non-church goers that we were the cause of 9-11. All that horror was on our head. Those twats were serious and they were mad.Whoa Boy,,,, I just felt the welcome mat of religion that day, I'll tell you.There's a spiritual knowing that most the religious will never know. The religious people that I've met here (in the West) just seem to have this thing about 100% religious conformity. Ya, that doesn't happen to me very often but every once and a while I will get people that say I'm "evil" for not believing in god and then they'll go through the whole eternity in hell thing.

Careful Mike, we haven't had a female Prime Minister yet. Then again, Margaret Thatcher wasn't a real female, was she?

If I recall correctly; there are some parts of America were you cannot be elected to public office if you are an Atheist.

Mike, I am very careful who I tell about being Agnostic. It can get people very threatened and agressive.I live in a Small oasis of a University town in the state of Michigan. The rest of the state is very conservative Christian for the most part. Only a short srive out of town in almost any direction and I will start to see homemade billboards erected on farmland which read "repent or die!", or some other Bible quote meant to induce fear or guilt. Sometimes they have graphic depictions of a crucified Jesus with blood running down his face.There is also a lot of anti-semitism around here.

Ah, the old double standard.If a woman is seen as feminine, she isn't considered up to such a serious, demanding job like being Prime Minister of a country, yet if she is less feminine, serious, and forceful, she is faulted for not being more feminine.

Well, certainly I live in another world compared to people like Schraff. In my home town, we have billboards erected, with reserved and guiding messages, like: " sin is trying to get out of life, what God didn't put in it ". Ok, not very subtle but the orange colored background and basic font in tiny writing, kind of tells me that if you got out your parper and blurted out " I don't believe in God " - Either people would ignore you or think " and? ". So I sympathize with you.
When I read " I was quite shocked. I mean to be honest Deliverance came to mind. - Intended pun.

I guess the U.K is more accepting... I wish the USA was more like that...

It's funny how at least people from the northern U.S. and most of Canada say that the two countries aren't that different. Canada has a very diverse cultural landscape, even just going western to eastern Canada, so I can't speak for the whole country. But where I am, (middle of the wonderfully flat and currently snowing prairies ) mention that your a Christian (or sometimes even that you just believe in God)and be in for some interesting looks...Last Federal election, the leader of the opposition was blasted for a few reasons. Being a young earth creationist was one of them, but the main reason was that he did not campaign on sundays. It was not a good time for Canadian politics which usually doesn't get that bad with the bashing.
