Lovely. My state BOE knows no shame.
News, Sports, Jobs - Lawrence Journal-World: news, information, headlines and events in Lawrence, Kansas
It was painful to watch these events unfold the first time back in '99. I simply cannot stand idly by this time around. It's likely that the shift to the conservative board members will allow creationism to be taught in our schools, and it's also likely that there's little anyone can do to change these hardliners' minds.
But I cannot help but to be vocal about it this time around. So would anyone have any suggestions or experience in these matters? I would greatly appreciate any links of groups or advice at this point.
Oh, BTW, one quote from Abrams, a conservative primary winner, really irks me: he believes that "good science that is measurable, observable, testable, repeatable," and that evolution doesn't meet that definition.
Anyone wish to fire the first shot across the bow on that particular quote, feel free.
Thanks for any replies.

First step would be to contact your local ACLU. In the unlikely event that they don't have a volunteer position available, I'm sure they can reccomend a group that does.

Other than that, basic grassroots petitions and letter writing campaigns work better than you'd think. Show the politicians that a large chunk of the voting populace is against their actions, they'll start watching out for their jobs.
Hit a streetcorner with a clipboard and a petition form, and stop passersby. But you might want to check with the city if you need a permit or something to set up shop on a corner for an extended period of time.

Thanks, Dan.
Fortunately, the state board rep. for my district is very much against teaching the creationism along with evolution, so I really wouldn't have to petition on the street much. I would also feel a little misplaced doing so in other districts, since I do not have residence in those controversal areas. I'll take a closer look at ACLU.
Any other suggestions from anyone?

down with Germ Theory!
Here's a (tongue-in-cheek) suggestion:
Rally yourself with Christian Scientists and get a movement going to ban the Germ Theory of Disease from being taught in public schools - make sure your movement is visible and parallels the creo movement.
Hope that others see the parallel, and thus the absurdity of teaching creationism with science.
(of course, given the mindset of those about to make the decision, this may backfire horribly...)

Re: down with Germ Theory!
I think we all agree that Pasteur was wrong and bio terraine is everything in respect to disease, while this is true, it shouldn't be included in the Creationists camp(not all creationists understand this truth), because its more about the love of money, the unholy alliance of the FDA & drug companies to profit by promoting Pasteurs belief that the germ is everything in relation to disease, and that they have the only answers(drugs), when this is simply not true. I thought the holistic movement is not all from the Christian camp, but that they both likely agree that bio terraine is everything, though their likely is place for some drugs if their side effects don't kill you.
P.S. The Germ Theory might make an interesting topic though, the basis of all them drugs people are taking, cause of the false belief that the germ is all in respect to disease, when we all know Pasteur was wrong, etc...

Good luck. Make sure that you contact the religious leaders from the Lutheran, Presbyterian, Episcopal and Catholic Churces in your area so that they can help you. They have all come out opposing creationism.
You need to make it perfectly clear that it is not Christianity that opposes TOE but only a small but vocal minority of cultists.

whatever- I don't know that I can agree with you, since I have no idea what "bio terraine" means... but please don't respond to me here:

I would appreciate it if you would start a topic on Germ Theory, perhaps start by describing where Pasteur was wrong and/or the details of the "bio terraine" theory. Thanks.

Thanks for all replies and links. I contacted Dr. Peter Gegenheimer at KCFS recently, and I think this organization is the best step to take so far.
Thanks again!
