Tectonics is a relatively simple concept: plates of crust bump around on the surface of the earth, and over time they cause changes to the continents and the seas.
For the current arrangement of these plates there is this cool visualization:
A Luminescent Map of the World's Earthquakes Since 1898
quote:
You're looking at the latest work of John Nelson, ... he's used his talents to chart a century's worth of earthquakes (a staggering 203,186 of them) across the globe.
So what you are seeing are the boundaries of the plates as they grind together and some of the stress relief within the plates.
Pretty simple.

You can see the mid-ocean ridges as finer lines, and the subduction zones as bright areas. And you can see why they call the north Pacific the Ring of Fire.

Latest techtonic mechanism
Tectonics is a relatively simple concept: plates of crust bump around on the surface of the earth, and over time they cause changes to the continents and the seas.
What do you know about the mechanism behind plate movement. The theory used to be that convection currents in the upper mantel was what caused the plates to move, but I read somewhere that that theory has fallen out of favor as of late because of the lack of evidence that there actually are such currents. Do you know anything about the latest theories regarding this?

Whoever calls me ignorant shares my own opinion. Sorrowfully and tacitly I recognize my ignorance, when I consider how much I lack of what my mind in its craving for knowledge is sighing for. But until the end of the present exile has come and terminated this our imperfection by which "we know in part," I console myself with the consideration that this belongs to our common nature. - Francesco Petrarca

Re: Latest techtonic mechanism
I'm no expert, but there is also slab pull (subduction) and ridge push.

Well I guess I'm out of date as well. I would not be surprised to see tidal effects and I would have expected that there would be currents as there are in the ocean. Hmmm.

I once poked around for evidence of either one and was unable to find any. Let me know if you've come across any.
