What is to be done about a segment of society a large segment that refuses to recognize reality? Our answer is nothing. If they leave us alone, we should leave them alone. If they get aggressive and try to force their dogma upon us, then uncompromising resistance is essential.
The problem though, is that many people in congress fall into that category and they are making decisions (or the lack of decisions) based on their false beliefs that affect the rest of us.
The problem is that YEC beliefs bring with them a general scientific illiteracy that affects how they view science.
Climate change denial is the most obvious one of these false beliefs affecting legislation and action (or lack thereof), but young earth beliefs are also involved.
That people with such beliefs are on committees for science, or that they want to review scientific grants is another example.
No, the answer is not to do nothing, the answer is to educate the mass numbers of scientifically illiterate people in this country, and to require some basic knowledge of reality in our representatives. The answer is to push back against all attempts to further dumb-down our education system, and require scientific literacy for graduation.
Get Texas out of textbooks.
